PAIN

I am in my mid twenties, and have running experience from several years ago. In the past 5 years, however, I have only run occasionally. I also just had a baby and got over a broken ankle. I am about to begin a training program for a half marathon I plan to run in November. Every couple of weeks, I get a new pain. First it was my knee, and now my back. It is very frustrating because all I want to do is run. My question is, should I run through the pain, or should I take time off?

Bethany,

Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. Why would you ignore that? Taking time off might not fix it either. You might need to re-evaluate your shoe choice, maybe have some one critique your current running style, work on your core muscles more. After having a baby, your core is often a bit weak, that includes your back and abs. That could even have an impact on your kness, it's all connected. My 2 cents : focus on strengthining your core muscles, sometimes your feet actually change size and shape post-baby, so re-evaluate your running shoes, and then hit the road again slowly.

thanks for the good advice... I am thinking of beginning a runner's yoga program. I think it will really help with my core - thanks again!!
