I am trying to understand at what point I am in my training and even if I should set up to do a marathon.

I was told I have diabetes type 2 in December 07. I was put on Metformin at 500 mg 2 times a day. Since that time I have started to walk and run. I have lost 57 pounds going from 244 to 188. My sugar is normal. I am 57 years old. I run at a 10 min a mile pace. I run 4-5 times a week covering anywhere from 21-27 miles. I have done distances of 9 and 8 miles in the past month. I saw your novice schedule 2, and test myself somewhat the last two weeks. For week 3 I did 6.5, 4.5,rest,rest,7, and 3 and for week for I did 4,6,4,rest,rest,11.5,rest, 12 mile bike. I want to run the Disney marathon in Jan 09. Should I attempt or not?

George,
I say, go for it, but not without your doctor's ok. Your goal is to finish and have fun, so get started. You should for sure get your doc's stamp of approval first.

As a pharmacist, I think it is very impressive that you have changed your life after having been diagnosed with diabetes. So many times patients do not realize the effect this disease can have on the body and just rely on medicine to fix it!
Sounds like you may not be considered diabetic anymore if your sugars have normalized! Inquire to your physician to perhaps take you off the metformin and see how your body responds or maybe he/she will prescribe 1/2 tab. I would say if you are no longer having symptons such as light headed, fatigue, numbness etc...go for the marathon. Of course ask your physician first! It is great to have such a high goal to reach for. Good Luck!
