Question about Snape

As I was Skimming through OotP the other day I noticed something that caught my attention. In the American Version Chapter 26 page 592, at the end of the first Paragraph it says ... A girl was laughing as a scrawny boy tried to mount a bucking broomstick. Could this be Harry In the SS when Quirell was jinxing the broom. Also Voldie's Laugh is described as high pitched could he have been laughing. Hmmm, I just wondered what you guys thought.

I doubt it. I doubt JKR would put in a thought from a few years ago when he's been reliving childhood memories.

Also, he wasn't trying to mount it when it was bucking. Quirrel started jinxing it when he was in the air already.

I think it's more likely Snape when he was younger - I'm almost certain of it.

No Eyed Deer who the girl was though

I, too, figured that it was poor lil Snapey. Poor dude. Nasty underpants and clumsy on a broom. No wonder he's always in a foul mood.

Those were Snape's memories, so someone was probably laughing at him when he first tried to get on a broom

No doubt in my mind that it was Snape getting on the broom, I dunno who the girl was though. And no girl, if I remember correctly, was laughing when Quirrel jinxed Harry's broom.

It would have been a prominent memory of Snape given that his stated jealousy over James was that James was a good Quidditch player. I personally don't believe that excuse, but I could see Snape wanting to reinforce it.

Random Question: Was Snape an Orphan? or do they mention his family? I cant for the life of me remember...

I'm wondering if James and Snape were related somehow, possibly half-brothers or something. I mean I was thinking about Snapes worst memory where James tells Lily that Its more the fact that Snape "exists" as opposed to something he'd done that made James hate him... I could be way off there - but I was just thinking.

Oh and Sorry for swinging the subject a different way, i just didnt want to start a new "Snape" thread!!

I too have thought that maybe Snape and James could be related somehow. If Snape was illigetiment (sp?) that would give him lots of reasons to be jealous of James. Perhaps he has been denied some birthrights like the mysterious Potter fortune?! Or, maybe we are just stretching here, who knows!

As much as this seems far-fetched to me, I cant deny the thought had struck me as well... it's easier anyway that he was related to James rather than Lily...

LilMiss, his parents were in one of his childhood memories, so he grew up with them at least.

I realise it seems a stretch - and there isnt too much evidence to back it up, but it was just a thought I had. Simply because they do hate each other with such intensity and I find it hard to believe that its just a "schoolboy rivalry"... I do think that there's more to it - it may not be that they are related, but there's SOMETHING!!

I mean I've also leaned toward the the theory that he may be related to Sirius and the Blacks, but there's nothing to really back that up either (just random thoughts I try to build theories on)
The only tiny thing I have that backs that up is that all purebloods are related in 'some' way... not much at all to go on!!!!

(btw - thanks Kitch for answering the qn about the parentals!)

I don't think it ever actually says he is, but we can assume so because he was a death eater.

I'm not totally positive about whether Snape is a pureblood or not, but some things to back up him being a pureblood are:

He was/is a Death Eater
He was in Slytherin and is now head of that house
He came to Hogwarts knowing more curses than most upperclassmen

Snape is likely a pureblood, but remember Draco said that some wizarding families were considered better than others. Do you think Snape was from a 'less desirable' wizarding family? Might James have had a little prejudice due to upbringing, class-wise? Might Snape have come in with a chip on his shoulder (and more curses than most 7th years) due to his feeling of inferiority?

Whew! Talk about making wild stabs at delving into a psyche...

Well, we know that Snape's father wasn't very nice to him and may have abused him. I'm sure that doesn't help at all.

We cant be sure whether the ones in the memory were Snape's parents: sure, the hook-nosed man was probably his father, but unless I'm much mistaken it doesnt describe the woman; could be his older sister, or maybe she's not even a relative...
once again, these are all long shots...
