I was bored and then I was thinking... I think I want to make a message board of my own dedicated to reading. Kind of like an online book club I guess you could call it. Basically I want it a message board where we all read a book together and then basically as we get to certian parts in the book stop and have a conversation on the board about what we think of it so far and our thoughts on what to come, then a discussion on the whole book once we finish reading it. If anybody would be interested in something like that let me know. If I get enough people who are interested I'll actually make it. I think if you checked my personal message board you will find the same stuff I just wrote here. Well anyways, if anybody is interested let me know.

That's actually a really good idea! I'd be interested in being a part of it. You should have thought of it in the summer though, when I actually had time to read books. I've still got some time left in my schedual (sp?) for reading and stuff. I'd like to give it a try! What kind of books did you have in mind? No Sci-fi please (unless it's The Hitchhiker's Trilogy. Those books are hilarious!). There's a problem though; would we all have to go out and buy the same book? Well, I guess it wouldn't be too bad, though $$$ is sort of an issue with me right now. Tell me what books you had in mind. Or maybe when you've gotten the group together we can all discuss it.

That is a really good idea! It should be a members only thing though, so there aren't a whole lot of spammer's.

Has anyone read the book Hatchet? I've started reading it and it seems pretty good. I have to read it by the end of my week off school. And book's don't seem as good when you have to read them by a certain date.

(My whole city get's a week off school, because the "World Bike Championships" are being held here next week )

Dad-Eye: Well let's not have the Riley here teach him to speak. First day of preschool: "Teacher, can I go to the f*cking potty?"

Sign me up!

To help with money, we could stick mostly to books that are out in paperback. If you buy them at places other than bookstores, they are usually cheaper. Also, libraries.

My friends tried to start their own book club. I told them if they actually had time to do something like that, I was extremely jealous, but in the mean time, I had other more required things to do, so I wanted nothing to do with it.

Yeah, I was thinking money may be an issue, espicially if we read like one book after another. And seeing as we are all apart of this board room and have all ready the first 5 HP books, we might as well skip out on those books since we discuss it enough over here. I was thinking for the most part that I would recomend getting a library card at your local library, that would probably be the cheapest way around things. Also I know their are used book stores around that you can get paper backs for like $3-$4 a peice because they are used.

I was thinking any type of book really. I was thinking when I make the board room we can like make a thread we can keep active and chat about what books we like and want to read and stuff, maybe have an open discussion about what to read. Well, I can honestly say I'm in the middle of Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice, so I was thinking since I'm already at like page 100 or so I could either wait until I finish this book to start, or we could start with this book as our first. What do you guys think to that?

My general thoughts on the matter would be like we would, once we picked the book anyways, make like a meeting spot in the book. Kind of like once you got to that specific spot you check the board and see who has made it to that part yet. I would also make a brand new thread for each meeting spot (the most obvious type of meeting spots I would say is the end of the chapters, like a chapter discussion). Basically so we don't accidently read any spoilers by reading in the wrong threads. I personaly hate spoilers when I get into the book so I figure this way you can only choose to read the threads for the part you have made it to, and if you haven't made it to the next pert, it will be on it's own thread so you don't have to worry about spoilers.

I was thinking about setting the board up with three types of users. You all know how this board has moderators and you can distinguish them from everybody else because it says they are in that specific group under their logins. I was thinking I will set it up so anybody who has a Network 54 login account can read only. I will make an actual group, probably name it something like 'Keyca's Place Book Club Member' and link the book club to my web page (Keyca's Place). I figure that way only people who apply for membership in that group can actually post and respond. Basically that will keep out people who just want to waste time and either spam or make a post or two and never show up again. My hopes are that if they have no intentions on coming back they won't bother applying for membership. Basically to apply all you have to do is click respond, and it will bring you to a screen that tells the names of the groups to apply to. I will make a second seperate grouping also. I'll make them Moderators. Basically to make sure nobody is using bad language, and posting spoilers in a place it doesn't belong and what not. Well, those are my current ideas I had towords it after I started thinking about it, what do you guys think?

Well, I think that starting with Interview with a Vampire is as good as any to start with. I read it a long time ago and would like to re-read it. When most are done with it, we could decide whether we wanted to continue with the series or try something else.

Well, I'm game. I would be willing to read pretty nearly anything - although I draw a line at really violent, body-mangling stuff. I think it would be a good idea to make use of the library as much as possible. After all, that is what it is there for. Also, if you happen to have a librarian who really knows his/her stuff, you can get all sorts of recommendations for book club reading.

I have never read Interview With a Vampire, but I would be willing to give it a shot. I suppose we could list some recommendations and let everyone put in there two cents worth. Even if we don't use someone's idea this time, we can keep it in mind for another book.

Some recommendations off the top of my head :

The Da Vinci Code (I've read it but would read it again)
Angels and Daemons (I haven't read this yet, but heard good things)
Contact (the book is supposed to be better than the movie, which I thought was good)

Well, what kind of age group and reading levels are we dealing with here? I'm 15 years old, but unlike most of my peers, I enjoy reading classics like "The Scarlet Letter" and "Great Expectations". I'm also into Shakespeare. I own a huge book with all of his plays in it. It's bigger than OotP! I hate to be the only one to disagree, but the Vampire book doesn't appeal to me. I think it might be a good idea to read a mystery novel; like something by Mary Higgins Clark or (my fave) Agatha Christie.
Suggestions-

-"The Secret Adversary" by Agatha Christie
-"And Then There were None" by Agatha Christie
-Anything by Agatha Christie
-Plays by Shakespeare
-"Troubling a Star" by Madeline L'Engle
-Other books by Madeline L'Engle (I know she's written many others, but I don't know their names)
-Stuff I can't think of right now... I'll get back to you...

DO NOT READ "THE CATCHER IN THE RYE" BY J.D. SALINGER!!!! I hated that book. It was terrible. I can't believe some people actually LIKE that book! (sorry)

Ohh I'm def interested... I really like this idea. It'd be nice to cover a book from each genre and discuss it, cause I usually stick to the same genre all the time. We have to make sure the majority of people could understand it (level-wise) and that appeals to most people, too. Like I just checked out "White Oliander" from the library (sp?) and from the sound of it, it's not something a lot of guys would be willing to read heh. Who knows, though. Anyway, I wanna do this!

I really like this idea too! I don't think reading levels will be to much of a problem, I get the feeling that most people here are pretty advanced at that kind of thing. I'm up for reading Interview with a vampire, from what I hear of it, it's worth reading.

Since we only had one vote saying no, might as well start with Interview With The Vampire. Sorry Flure lol. Well, I'll post the link once I have it set up.

That is the address to the Book Club. I just finished creating the message board and the two groups for it. You have to have a login to read the board. You have to apply at the group to actually be able to post.

I'm going to add everybody's login names who said they would be interested in joining the club threw my end so you can just start off already a member without actually having to apply. Now, I made a group for Moderators, but until I see how well this thing takes off I'm going to not have the mods made yet. I'll wait and see who seems to be interested in it first.

Also, I'll give that guy with all the numbers in his login ONE chance since he made a post about it. Say one thing stupid and I won't give you a chance, I'll just take you out of the group so you have no access.

I added you in HPFan. Now for future refference, all you have to do is go to the site under your login. You can't read it without a Network 54 login. Which I'm sure I don't have to explain what a login is...

Well I set it up so to actually be able to post and respond to posts you have to apply to a group. Basically go and post where you feel like it on my board, and when you do, it will bring you to a screen that says only people in the following groups can post here: "Book Club Members" and "Book Club Moderators". It will also give you a link to apply for acciss in the two groups. Don't apply as a mod though because I'm only making a few people mods, haven't decided who yet, so apply as a member. I'll practically accept anybody here if I recognize your name lol.

Oh look! It's the number girl and her 6th personality 22abc- That's a good one! what's the 22 for? Is that how many personalities you are going to come up with before you finally leave? And stop responding to your own posts.

Anyway... I'm really sorry Chris, but I just can't join your book club right now. My school library didn't have the vampire book, and I don't even know where the public library is in this town (recall that I just moved here). I have so many things on my plate right now and I just don't have time for reading anything that isn't for school (I could read Interveiws with vampires if it was in french- God knows I could use alot of practice!). Plus, play practices have been increased to three a week, and the teachers are merciless! I'd really like to join though- Maybe after the play is over and after Christmas exams... anyway, I'm really sorry.

It's no problem. Actually I just started a second job, and now I'm wondering if I'll even have time for my own club. Kind of pathetic on my account, wouldn't you say lol?
