So Sirius gave Harry this mirror to talk to him. But one: Harry never opened it and two: when he finally found it he didn't feel a sense of guilt that a normal person (fiction character) would probably feel after discovering it so late. Which can only mean that there should be another reason for including the mirror in the story and chances are that Harry will talk to Sirius through it somehow later.
PS: I am not a desperate Sirius fan; the thing is JK had too many unclear things picturing hs death.

i thought that about the mirror too. i must have forgot about it though. acutally, i forgot most of those details in the book. i need to reread them.
i know jk wouldn't put the mirror in the book just because she felt like taking up some space. it probably will serve some purpose in the future. i guess we'll just have to wait to find out. who knows when jk is gonna finish the books. i could be 50 by the time the 7th one comes out for all i know.
*before you insult someone, walk a mile in their shoes. then, when you insult them, you will be a mile away and have their shoes.* LOL!

" 'I want you to take this,' [Sirius] said quietly, thrusting a badly wrapped package roughly the size of a paper-back book into Harry's hands.
'What is it?' Harry asked.
'A way of letting me know if Snape is giving you a hard time - No don't open it here.' Said Sirius, with a wary look at Mrs. Weasly (from which I gather that Harry had indeed at first tried to open the package), who was trying to pursuade the twins to wear hand-knitted mittens (which is a very important point, thier ickle wee hands might get cold).
'I doubt Molly would approve, but I want you to use it if you need me, alright?'
'OK.' said Harry, stowing the package away in the inside pocket of his jacket, but he knew he would never use whatever it was. It would not be he, Harry, who lured Sirius from his place of safety, No matter how fouly Snape treated him in the fourth-coming Occlumency classes. "
I believe that firstly, Harry wanted to prove that he could brave Snape on his own, and secondly he wanted to protect Sirius because he knew that Snape would be tampering with his mind using Legilimency during the Occlumency classes and find out that they had be conversing.
And Thirdly, but most importantly, Harry did not want to any harm to come to Sirius and knew that Sirius' reckless behavior would lead him straight to Hogwarts and get them both in trouble.
Then Later, When Harry was packing up his clothes to go home at the beggining of the school holidays...
"He bent down, pulled it out from underneath his trainers, and examined it.
He realised what it was within seconds. Sirius had given it to him, just inside the front door of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place.
"Use it if you need me, alright?"
Harry sank down into his bed (from which I gather was very soft because you cant just sink down into every bed), and unwrapped the package.
Out fell a small, square mirror (which is funny because I always pictured it to be oval). It looked old; It was certainly dirty. Harry held it up to his face and saw his own reflection looking back at him. He turned the mirror over. There, on the reverse side was a scribbled note from Sirius.
"This is a two-way mirror, I've got the other one of the pair. If you need to speak to me, just say my name into it; you'll appear in my mirror, and I'll be able to talk in yours. James and I used to use them when we were in seperate detentions"
Harry's heart began to race. He remembered seeing his dead parents in the mirror of Erised four years ago. he was going to be able to talk to Sirius again, right now, he knew it. (A feeling of desperation and hope) "
Then when holds up the mirror, with "Excitement flooding through him," He says Sirius Black and nothing happens.
"The frustrated face looking back out the mirror was still his own."
Then he feels angry and throws the mirror back into the trunk where it shatters.
From this I gather that he feels a whole mix of emotions: First Excitement (and hope and desperation) and then Anger and Dissapointment. I would give him no reason to feel guilty here.
I hope that helped some...
...Dang, I should be a Ravenclaw. :P

Remember that DD told Harry that the Order had much more reliable means to communicating, that didn't rely on the Floo network. When I read about this mirror, I wondered if that wasn't the method. Perhaps others who have such a mirror could be contacted with the mirror Harry has (if it can be repaired).
Also, I agree with Helen, if Sirius left his at Grimmauld Place, perhaps Lupin could use it to contact Harry.
