Today (Oct. 16) is the feast of St. Hedwig. She was an Eastern European duchess whose husband founded a big convent. I think she was the grandmother or something to St. Elizabeth of Hungary. After her husband's death she took vows and became a nun in convent he founded. She lived in the late 1100s.

Okay, I see no connection to Hedwig the owl, but hey...

Actually, there is another St. Hedwig - Hedwig the Blessed, but I know nothing about her. Maybe she had an owl thing...

If I remember correctly from 13 yrs of Catholic schooling, that includes Kindergarten people I didn't have to repeat a year! St. Hedwig is the patron saint of orphans!

Okay, I'll see your Catholic school student and raise you a Catholic school teacher and Catholic parish Director of Liturgy! heehee

I haven't looked up Hedwig the Blessed. Perhaps she is the patron saint of orphans. That wasn't mentioned on the blurb for this Hedwig.

If anyone is really compulsive and needs to check, you can do that at
http://www.catholic.org

I'm, personally, not wild about the site (they are a little rabid for my taste) but they do have a reasonably complete list of Saints which has come in handy a few times for all sorts of trivial reasons.

Sandy's site doesn't list Saints Hedwig as being patron saints of anything- however, the patron saint of 'potters' are Catherine of Alexandria, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, Sebastian. The patron saint of orphans is someone else.

Okay, I swear I heard some where that Hedwig is patron to orphans, but after checking around, I don't think that is correct. Hmmm. I wonder who I am thinking of then. No matter, I am not Catholic anymore anyway! My husband (who was raised Methodist) wanted nothing to do with becoming Catholic! So, now we are Lutherans...don't ask!! Long boring story. LOL

Well, Nicholas is the patron saint of children, among a couple other things. *note*: DUH! Bet you couldn't guess that about jolly old St. Nicholas...

However, I don't recall a patron saint of orphans. That doesn't mean there isn't one. In fact, I'd be surprised if there wasn't. This same weird site I listed before was, at one time, trying to get people to rally around the idea of a patron saint of the internet. That was just TOO WEIRD!!!!!!!!
