GoF chapter 34, Voldemort says to Harry
"You have been taught how to duel, Harry Potter?" To me this seems more like a statement made by V than a question. If it is not a question how do you think V knows that Harry has had dueling lessons? Could it be Snape or maybe even Lockhart?
One other thing I have always been curious about and have never been able to come up with an answer of my own is chapter 16 of SS. It begins with "In years to come..." How far in "years to come" is Harry talking about? It makes me think of the Agatha Christie novel "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd," when I read this book I knew who the murderer was from the way that the very first line was written. Should there be an obvious clue from the way JKR begins that chapter? The two sentences make me think of each other, but I can't find a way to make sense out of JKR's like I did Christie's.

I don't know that the first one really means anything but that second one that says "in the years to come..." puzzled me from the very first time that I read the book. Were these books written as a biography of his life some time after the whole thing happend? Or was it just one of those stupid little things that JKR put in the book but has no real meaning to it what so ever?

"In years to come, Harry would never quite remember how he had managed to ger through his exams when he half expected Voldemort to come busting through the door at any moment." That is the very first line to chapter 16 in Sorcerer's Stone, if that is the line that you wanted to know becaue you didn't have your book on you.
The other simply says "'You have been taught how to duel, Harry Potter?' said Voldemort softly, his red eyes glinting through the darkness." This line appears at the bottom of the first page of chapter 34 in Goblet of Fire.
I think that the dueling one doesn't really have a significance (it was just a question, right?) but the "in years to come" quote has me sort of confused. As I stated above, maybe the books were written to be kind of like a biography after (or maybe still during) his life OR was it just something that JKR put in there not really thinking about it at the time?

If you are referring to the "in years to come.." that is the very first line of chapter 16, book 1 American version. the dueling question is on the first page of chapter 35 GoF, but that is near the bottom of the page, again that is the American version.

Serverus, I thought that IF V was making the comment about dueling based on inside information, and not just on the assumption that Hogwarts students are always taught to duel at some point, then the information came from Lucius Malfoy. Draco would have told his dad about his duel with Harry and the the resulting snake incident.
The '..in years to come...' quote is interesting, because it is in book one. For Harry, there are at least 6 more years to come. When people say, in years to come, they generally mean more than 6 years, they mean a life time of years.

Maybe JK didnt put it there to mean that after years and years Harry will think back on those days, but just wrote it to mean that he had no idea on how he did his exams when thinking of Voldy...
Or, if she did, "years to come" could just be the 5 years until the 7th book (where he may be killed)...
Dunno if i made sense, it makes sense in my head but I'm not sure if I wrote it right...
