descendant or ancestor

In CoS, chapter 18 (dobby's reward) Dumbledoor emphatically states that Voldemort (Tom Riddle) is the last remaining ANCESTOR of Slytherin. Ancestor and descendant are two different things. Dumbledoor is saying that Slytherin descended from him, if you get what I mean.

In a JKR, we asked if that was a typo, and she said it was a "deliberate" typo, but she changed it to descendant in later issues. My issue says ancestor but some of yours might have the "descendant" version. I am confused, how could Voldemort be an ancestor of Salazar Slytherin?

"You too are about to learn what happens to wrongdoing at my school."
Filch cracked his whip threatingly.
"You know what? said Fred. "I dont think we are. George, I think we've outgrown
full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lightly.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and said together,
"Accio Brooms!"...

"Give her hell from us, Peeves!"

Heir, not Ancestor. Salazaar would be the ancestor. I think it meant that Tom Riddle had cousins because they are all interrelated.

No, my CoS book says exactly this: Tom Riddle is the last remaining ANCESTOR to Salazar Slytherin.

Did you get your book off the black market? Because it's supposed to say heir. An ancestor are people from generations before you. He couldn't be an ancestor to salazaar, salazaar would be his. Look in a dictionary.

I know what heir and ancestor means, and the new versions might have heir in them, but i got mine the year they came out and mine says ancestor (and i didn't get it off the black market, i got it in "Barns and Noble") And JKR says that ancestor is a deliberate typo. I dont get it, but i know it must be some clue she is trying to get us to see.

I heard that about the typo...I even saw the interview where she said something about it being deliberate. However, I don't own the books (I own book 5, though, so yay me)...so I can't check on it.

My book says ancestor. I dont know how this can be, though. I have been wondering about this for a while, so i decided to ask you all.

Narcissa- why would i have gotten a book off of the black market for a lot of money when i could get it at the bookstore for about 10 dollars? that would make no sense.

I don't have the book.

When I want to read it, I rent it and if I want to look something up for some reason then I have a version downloaded in PDF.

I reckon it was a typo and she was talking about changing the 'only heir' bit - meaning that he has relatives.

Might as well face it

Kitch, do you have all of them on PDF? I only have time to read things on my Palm Pilot and haven't found any HP books (other than fics) yet.

The typo: I don't recall JKR saying that it was a typo. What I remember (and if I had more time, I'd look it up in the interviews) is that someone asked her about heir versus ancestor, but the person asking the question said something about decendent and JKR slighly said something about decendent being an important clue in the future. It was a confusing comment, one that stirred up a lot of discussions on many different boards.

i personally believe that it was a deliberate typo and that JKR is giving us a vitle clue to the later books.
my book is exactly stating that Voldemort is the last remaining ANCESTOR of Slytherin. Dont ask me how this can be, because i dont know. we'll have to wait until later books so JKR can explain it.

*"You two," Umbridge says, gazing down at Fred and George, "are about to learn what happens to wrongdoers at my school."
"You know what?" said Fred. "I don't think we are."
He turned to his twin.
"George," said Fred, "I think we've outgrown full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lighty.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and and said together, "Accio Brooms!"
"We won't be seeing you," Fred told Professor Umbridge, swinging his leg over the broom.
"Yeah, don't bother keeping in touch," said George, mounting his own.
"STOP THEM!" shrieked Umbridge, but it was too late.As the Inquisitorial Squad closed in, Fred and George kicked off from the ground and shot fifteen feet in the air. Fred looked across the hall at the poltergeist bobbing on his level above the crowd.
"Give her hell from us, Peeves."
And Peeves, whom Harry had never seen take an order from a student before, swept his belled hat from his head and sprang to a salute as Fred and George wheeled about to tumultous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front door into the glorius sunset.

I suppose that means technically that Voldemort (or Tom Riddle, could be either persona) could have a child. I find that unlikly though. Now if it was a diliberate typo, then maybe it had something major to do with the plot, but JK changed her mind about it and that is why she fixed it. The best plotline I could possibly think of is Voldemort is Salazar Slytherin, maybe time travel or something, I couldn't say, but maybe she didn't like whatever plotline she cooked up and decided to get rid of it and fix the typo to clear up any loose ends.

Figures though, this comes up a week after I return the books I borrwed back to my grandmother yet again. Blah.

Just curious - seeing as Harry and Voldy exchanged a part of themselves to the other when the curse backfired, does that mean that Harry may share Voldy's connection with Slytherin - thus giving him an avenue to be the "Heir"?? (not that it would really make sense in the real world, but I guess in fiction anything goes) - - ie Harry was able to open the COS, when only the 'heir'of Slytherin could! Even though he could speak Parseltongue, that solely wouldnt have given him the ability to open the chamber!

Well, for one, we don't know that it was truely only the heir that can open it. I mean it could be mythology in their world about only him opening it, but we never seen who cursed it to only open for the heir, for all we know any yuts could open it, just to give Harry some credit.

Also, who is to say that Harry passed anything of himself on to Voldemort? I don't think it happened. I only think that Voldemort passed stuff on to Harry.

I think she means when Voldie took Harry's blood in the Graveyard- he has a part of HArry now- not necessarily his powers, but Harry gave him life.

descendent or ancestor

No score for this post
October 26 2003, 9:50 PM

Well, my copy also says ancestor instead of descendent. Dumbledore says this to Harry in the "Dobbys Reward" chapter. So...I pulled out the really, really big dictionary, not the good old desk version. I thought to look up ancestor in case there was some kind of alternative definition that might help. There does not seem to be one. Ancestor not only means some one in your PAST lineage, but more than one generation back (so, not grandparents).

Short of some sort of bizzare time lord (Dr. Who)plot, I can't see how this is possible.
