JKR says that the big secret or master plan has something to do with a theme that runs through all of the books. The Harry v's Voldemort is obvious but I have been thinking about what all the books have in common.I have speculated what they might mean. They are all pretty doubtful but still.....
1.The fact that harry has lots of gold and the weasly's dont have any. Where did harrys parents get all the money from? Could Lily be related to the weaslys in any way(red hair) so the gold is theirs too in the end?...doubtful I guess
2. Every time one of the trio calls snape 'snape' they are reminded by dumbledore or mcgonagall it is 'professor snape'. Maybe snape is not a qualified professor and he is using hogwarts to hide form voldermort. When he is there voldemort can not detect him and he doesn't have to hide his thoughts.
3. Nevilles forgetfulness is empasised in everybook. I think for some reason someone put a strong memory charm on him and it addled his memory. I have posted some theories as to why someone would put a charm on him in the past but people have always come up with good reasons why I am wrong. I still think he has been charmed though and this is important.
4. The fact that dean thomas is good at drawing and that hermoine is good a flame spells has been empahaised in several books (not sure if it in all of them) could these be important?
I think that 3. is most likley to affect the overall storyline...Anyone got any other ideas?

1. I doubt the Weasleys' shortage of money is significant - not everyone is rich. Even though Harry appears to have a lot of gold, I believe it's probably just enough to get him through his Hogwarts years before he's old enough to get a job.
2. I'm not sure if the way people address Snape is anything major. Dumbledore is loyal to Snape, we know that much...and I think Snape is loyal to Dumbledore. Snape would probably correct Harry if he said, "Dumbledore," minus the 'Professor.'
3. It's possible, yes, but Neville just seems like one of those scatterbrain types. Though, in the Order of the Phoenix, Neville improved greatly with the help of the DA. I think he just needs some kind of encouragement - he went well at the Potions test because Snape wasn't there to scare him.
4. Harry's Quidditch skills have also been emphasised in each book - most people have something particular they excel in.
I think the one main point is that at the end of each book so far, Harry and Voldemort have both been alive.

I hate to sound mean and petty, but to me, it sounds like you are copying theories straight out of "Ultimate Unofficial Guide..." Not that is bad or anything, just an observation.

Yep that is mean and petty <joke>Funnily enough I have just ordered that book from amazon and started reading it. These things occured to me when I was re-reading books 1-5. And yes..it does have some really way out theories....Any one got any other ideas on the recurring theme?

What's up with the "what's wrong with this picture" link? That face that flashes up scared the bejesus out of me! So what is wrong with the picture? I didn't stay there long enough to try and figure it out!!

I think there are secrets and there are themes. Certainly there is a secret, or maybe several that we won;t find out about until the end. We just get hints. I think the real secrets do involve Lily and James, who they are, who their parents are, etc... I don't think that Lily is related to the Weasleys in any significant way.
In terms of themes, I think that running through all the books is the growing up and growing more aware of the realities of life from Harry's perspective. At 11, everything is magic and wonderful, and as time goes by, he is faced with heavier and heavier problems, and now a clear burden and expectation.

Another one I just thought of is Ron's jelousy of Harry's fame. That seems to be a constant theme. Could the jelousy get too much for ron and he turns away from/against harry...he has alreday done this to some extent in book 4.
