did anybody notice how hermione flinches at voldemort's name in the bennining of OOtP, but she feels comfortable saying it in the end?
why do you think jk put that in there? do you think she'll have something to do with the destruction of voldy?

What i don't understand is why she "flinches" at all...Hermy is muggle born, so she knew nothing of the magical world unitil she got her letter when she turned 11.  She wasn't raised in a world where Voldemorte was a feared name. She read it in a book, being raised with a fear is different then: "learning" to fear something. Why would you fear something if it was believed that it doesn't exist? So why would Hermy fear Voldemorte until after the first book? To get into Griffindor, you have to a an amount of Bravery in your character. What was harry's reaction? he wanted to know the Killers name. He didn't flinch. Meh, maybe I'm just rambling....Then again maybe "i was born a rambling man".

I think Hermione's decided that she's not going to incease her fear of Voldemort by being afraid to speak his name. Even though Hermione was Muggle-born, if grown wizards around her are afraid to speak his name, any child would naturally be wary of it...but now that she's older, I think she's realised it's only a name.

I do agree with Locke that it's odd Muggle borns would fear the name. However, I think many are self-conscious with their heritage, so they try to mimic other wizards as much as possible. They see everyone else fear the name, so they fear in turn...even if they aren't aware completely of the significance. They just want to fit in. But with Hermione, she's around a friend who constantly says the name without fear, so she in turn gets used to it.

"Haven't you read "Hogwarts: A History?!"

lol! Anyways, she read so much about everything - in book 1 she knew who Harry was from sight on the train because she had already read about him in four books over the summer - that tells me she has a very good idea of what Voldemort is capable of, especially to her kind.

I agree that it seems that Hermione, as a Muggle probably shouldn't feel the need to say "You Know Who" all the time.  The really annoying one was Fudge calling Voldemort "Lord Thingy" at the end of book five.  Dumbledore has the right idea, call him Tom Riddle.

I think Narcissa is right that Hermione probably picked up the habit through what she has read.  You'd think that with all her reading, she'd have gotten past the "You Know Who" thing sooner.
