On page 253 SS (american edition paperback) Hagrid asked the centaur Ronan if he knew anything about the unicorn attacks, Ronan only replied, "Mars is bright tonight." The planet Mars is named after the Roman God of war, when Mars is bright it is said to be a sign of war. Ronan was clearly predicting the war which has come now in the books that Voldemort has rose again. But shortly after Ronan states, "Always the innocent are the first victims. So it has been for ages past, so it is now." I think he is talking about who Voldemort will attack first, so I think even with Dumbledore as Headmaster he will try to attack Hogwarts because who are more innocent then children?

Yes, I think that the centaur's remarks were almost certainly a BIG hint about what was coming.  Actually, I am hoping to hear more from the centaur's point of view now that Firenze is in the castle.  I'd like to know if there was anything more to that remark or if it was simply a foreshadowing of the war.

Actually - that can very well be the prediction of Sirius's death. Yes, children are innocent but Sirius served time for something he never did. Out of everyone in the series, I think he really portrays innocense. Still very cool though.

*"You two," Umbridge says, gazing down at Fred and George, "are about to learn what happens to wrongdoers at my school."
"You know what?" said Fred. "I don't think we are."
He turned to his twin.
"George," said Fred, "I think we've outgrown full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lighty.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and and said together, "Accio Brooms!"
"We won't be seeing you," Fred told Professor Umbridge, swinging his leg over the broom.
"Yeah, don't bother keeping in touch," said George, mounting his own.
"STOP THEM!" shrieked Umbridge, but it was too late.As the Inquisitorial Squad closed in, Fred and George kicked off from the ground and shot fifteen feet in the air. Fred looked across the hall at the poltergeist bobbing on his level above the crowd.
"Give her hell from us, Peeves."
And Peeves, whom Harry had never seen take an order from a student before, swept his belled hat from his head and sprang to a salute as Fred and George wheeled about to tumultous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front door into the glorius sunset.*

Good point.  One thing that bothers me about the centaurs predictions is that Harry got burned by going to the Ministry of Magic in OOTP.  He may wait too long in the next book to act when danger comes.  More innocents will die and Harry will again feel responsible.

Samantha, I am sorry but Sirius is far from being an innocent! Not Guilty of the crime he was accused of?? Yes. But the word INNOCENCE implies things he is FAR from.

Then we interpret the quote differently. "Always the innocent are the first victims. So it has been for ages past, so it is now." Sirius was innocent. Sirius died. Works for me.
