Sorry I feal obliged to correct your blunder. You said "LOTR" that is what you are talking about. The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, is a trilogy....actually, each book is split up into 2 parts. You may refer to Tolkien's Collection as "The Middle Earth Saga", a more fitting term I believe. I knew of other books, but as far as I am concearned, it is all myth and nothing of substance, The Hobbit and LotR are the truly great books, and the only ones that matter.
When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain

So there is 9 books, not 8? Am I forgetting any more lol? And where does that book fall in the series? Like is that at the very end, or is it mixed in there and I just need to get the right order?

Chris, JRR Tolkien wrote the Hobbit, LOTR, and the Silmarillion. He also wrote some short stories and the following books: The Lay of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle Earth, and The People of Middle Earth. All the other books you mentioned were written by Tolkiens son, Christopher. Christopher has taken the notes created by his father and the ideas and written a number of books about Middle Earth. Some of the books say they are written by both Christopher and JRR, but I believe this is because JRR's original notes or writings were used in them , not as quotes but as pieces of trhe stories. Not unlike JKR, I am sure Tolkien left piles of notes on how his world worked and ideas that never made print. This is where most of these new books are coming from.

Lotr is a trilogy, the hobbit is the prequel.
silmarillion is a guide to middle earth.
the other books you are talking about are the "history of middle earth," which is something like 13 volumes long.

I only read the Hobbit, FOTR, and most of TT...and skimmed ROTK. Never got beyond that.
I DID get the extended version of TT yesterday. It's EXCELLENT. I highly recommend anyone who liked the movie to grab it ASAP. It has more Gollum, and the Gandalf scenes really make the movie. I didn't get to the second DVD, but the last scene on the first disc with Faramir explaining the nature of one's enemy was probably one of the better speeches I've heard.

actually, there are actually tons of different stories by tolkein. have you read the lost tales of jrr tolkein? it goes way back before the time of the ring, and all the tales lead up to the story behind the creating of the ring. it's not a very popular book because jrr's brother put it together after he died.
*it's only funny until someone gets hurt.....THEN IT'S HILARIOUS!*

I also got the extended version of TT yesterday. It is great. It does deviate a bit from the book but doesn't change the storyline. One interesting thing was the way Merry and Pippen get caught in the tree roots, and Treebeard releases them. That happens in the book, but it happens in a different forest (the Old Forest) before the Hobbits reach Bree (Inn of the Prancing Pony), and they are resued by Tom Bombadil, a character left out of the movies.
In general, I think the extra scenes make the story easier to understand. I still have a problem with the Faramir scenes. The reason is that in the book, Faramir is wise enough to see the potential and problem with the ring just by having a conversation with Frodo. He releases the hobbits and does not take them to Osgilith.

I didn't like the Faramir in the movie, but the extended version did explain why they did that to him VERY well. They said that they had to emphasize just how evil this ring was and how corrupting it was. However, that's extremely hard to do, so if you suddenly introduce this character who just sits down to chat with Frodo and immediately says he'll help and the ring means nothing to him...you suddenly negate the entire movie's emphasis on just how powerful that influence is.
Plus, they bring up that Faramir in the books was much too static...which he is. He starts off as a good guy completely pure...and ends that way. So at least they make it more interesting.

My biggest problem with the movies is remembering what happened so far. Like, when I went to see FOTR, I didn't like it, so I didn't remember most of it. But when I seen TTT in the theaters, I loved that movie and I guess gained a new respect for FOTR, I guess you could say because I like it now. Well, when I went to see TTT, it was a year since I've seen FOTR, so I couldn't remember a darned thing that had happened up to that point. And a lot of the character names and place names slipped me also when I was watching it. So, I had to turn around and ask questions to my friend next to me every 5 minutes like some idiot. Well, this time, when ROTK comes out, I will be prepaired lol. I borrowed FOTR from my friend (and have been forgetting to return it to him...on puirpose of course) so I can rewatch it before the movie comes out. Then, we also bought TTT for my grandmother for Christmas. I'm opening it and watching it before we give it to her. She won't mind, and if she does my mom said she would say something like she opened it thinking it was one of mine not realizeing it was what we got her lol.
So, hopefully I can watch the movies without someone near me so I don't get disturbed! That way I'll know what the hell I'm watching when I go to see ROTK. ...What is the release date for that anyway?

Here's a question for you guys. I heard that when ROTK comes out, they are going to put FOTR and TTT back into theaters also. But I heard it a long time ago and haven't heard anything about it since. Has anyone else heard this, or was I just dreaming???

And this article was written in August and said that it hopes that more movie theaters will join and I am assuming that they must have because I checked http://movietickets.com/ for showtimes in my area and found some in Flint (which isn't really that big of a town).

It's the New Line Cinema site and it should have everywhere that's playing it. All you do is put in your zip code and it gives you some of the closest theaters that are playing the first 2
