Can anyone tell me how far in advance the public knew of the release date of any of the HP books.  In other words, was the first date of sale announced two weeks ahead of time, or a month, or what?

OR - did the publisher announce when they had received the book for publication?

Well, I know that SS wasn't realesed here in America when it was released in over seas where JK wrote it. Probably because it wasn't famous yet. Well, I'm not sure how far in advance the others were published and told about it (I screwed the sentence up but you get the idea...), but I know with OotP we learned the realease date in Janurary and it was published in the end of June.

I also remember that the publisher did say (before they stated a realease date) that when they got the manuscript, the earliest would be 6 months or so after they read the finished copy before they could release it. So, whenever JK finishes the next one, give it like 6 months to be released.

Yes, Bloomsbury and Schoolastic announced a release date (in June) when they received the manuscript in January.  I don't know if that is how it was done in the past, though, since I didn't read any of the books until after GoF had been out for several months.

That's allright, Locke. I didn't start to read the books until the first movie came to theaters as well. It came out in November of 2001 I beleive. I seen the movie, then borrowed the first four books from my grand mother and read them all between the realease of the movie and New Years '02 week I beleive. I went a year just randomly looking up rumers online, then eventually found this place late Janurary '03. So I've almost been here a year now, but a fan for about 2 years.
