Okay, time for a little break from HP. How many languages do you speak?
Obviously, I am fluent in American English, as it is my native language. I also know some spanish, but would really like to expand my knowledge on it. How about the rest of you?

Well, of course I speak American English. I took French for 4 years in high school and 4 semesters in college, but unfortunately I can only read and write it pretty well. When people speak slowly, I can usually understand them, but I'm not very good at speaking it myself. I'm kinda sad about that.
My mom said that if my sister got an A in French, she would take her to Paris and that I could come, too, so I'm really hoping my sister does well in the class.

HaHA- English, barely, some days. NO discernable apptitude for language.
In high school my freinds and I taught ourselves sign language. It was easier than passing notes. And we could communicate across a large classroom. Some of the teachers caught on, but I think they were impressed that we had learned something on our own and pretty much looked the other way!
In my job, I have to travel to other countries and I often need an interpeter. Its a nightmare. If you're not very careful, your message gets altered. I once had a 3 hour meeting with some people in Argentina. The multi-ligual rep from my company had to leave the room for most of the meeting and our local contact (who had his own agenda) remained to do the translation. I took lots of notes about the discussion and felt I was clear about their issues. At the very end of the meeting, my rep came back into the room just as I went about summing up the discussion. He took over the translation and it turned out that the local guy had totally mis-characterized the discussion. I was........very unhappy. Had to basiscally begin again. Since then, I am very concerned to get the translation right the first time.

I speak and understand American English. I understand, but refuse to speak, Canadian English (i will NOT say eh!!!). I'm in my third year of french, but the class I'm taking now is like sixth year french, and it's canadian french, which is WAY different from French french, but somehow i have an 85 in the class anyway. My teacher's grading system is questionable... I mean, I don't understand this frikin language, but since i do my homework, I get a good grade. hmmm... not a bad deal, just kind of annoying.
I also 'speak' some sign language. I taught myself how one summer because I found a book on it at the library and i thought it was really cool. I don't know anyone else that 'speaks' it, so the talking in class thing won't work for me. (besides, everything in my school is done on laptop computers, so we can just go on msn! hehe!).
I know alot of obsenities in other languages because my school is very international and has alot of people from different countries and cultures. It's pretty cool because I know some people who speak three or four languages fluently and are learning other languages. It's pretty cool.

I can speak American English fluently, and of course I can speak italian (it's my first language, and I daresay I speak it well!!)..
I've been taking French for the past three yrs, but I understand it only a little bit (I can read it well but I can't understand much if they speak quickly)...
Does Latin count as a Language? I know that very well!!!
In 6th grade I took spanish lessons, but I dont remember any of it, really... I wish my daddy would teach me: he spent all his childhood in Argentina, and spanish is his first language; he also speaks Croatian, but lets not get into that....

Well, i don't know about any other school, but taking a foreign language wasn't required in my high school. You could either take French, Spanish, or shop (I don't know if this is a common term, but shop class involves building things like tables, dressers, birdhouses, etc.) to fulfill a requirement.

I speak English, and very little french. I can't stand Boston, New York, or Southern accents. I don't know how it is there, but here Southern Accents are ALWAYS accociated with 'stupid'.
When I went to Texas I was surprised how many people have that bloody accent.

Weird seeing two people here who can communicate in sign language. I've always wanted to learn it. I am going back to school for the spring semester at a local college and was going to take American Sign Language I but it wasn't on the days that I go, so transportation was an issue and I had to take it off my schedule. Pitty, I've been looking forward to take it. Oh well, that will be next semester I guess.
I took Spanish my senior year of high school, but didn't pass it. Well I did, but I really don't know why. I should have failed, I don't remember anything and I didn't learn anything.
Obviously I speak the language that I'm typeing in also.
Oh, and if it counts I can speak idiot quite fluently.

About all I can do in ASL is the alphabet, and that was a long time ago that I learned that. Oh, and the sign for "friend". One of my parents' friends had a daughter who couldn't speak but she could hear. She also couldn't control her movements very much (MD), but whenever someone was nice to her, she would make the sign for "friend"
But that's about it.

Well, obviously, English is my first language (American). However, at one time, my French wasn't too shabby. I haven't used it in an age, though, so I wouldn't put a lot of faith in it now. My Spanish is quite weak but since my son is getting a language learning system for Christmas (don't worry, he's getting a TON of toys, too), I'll see if I can improve as he learns. I did learn a bit of rudimentary American Sign Language which I taught my son before he was able to speak. He did rather well with it and was able to use about 7 signs correctly in context. But that is about as far as we took that. Like LilMiss, I picked up some less savory phrases in various languages, but I find swearing in Yiddish to be quite satisfying.
I speak English, obviously, since I am American. I took quite a bit of Spanish in high school and college, but have lost a lot of it since I have no one to converse with in Spanish. But, I also know some Polish. My Grandfather was born and raised there so I learned some from Papa (rest in peace!)

Well... My first language was English, obviously. Then, last year, I started learning French. Then for some stupid reason, my school insists that the top classes should learn German too! *sighs*
Oh, and I'm telling my friend to teach me Arabic and another to teach me Italian. So... I'm sure my head will explode with all these languages... lol. Like when I started speaking German in my french class... but for some reason I'm useless in the actual German class!
Oh, and i quite like Welsh... I dunno why. Sadly, I dont have any welsh friends...

American English, I'm learning Welsh, I took some Spanish in an after school thing in sixth grade for a couple months(forgot everything), in high school they require two years of foriegn language, being that I live in a small place the only choices are Spanish and French. But I really want to learn Spanish and soon because I hate hanging out with these one boys in my school because they will start chatting away in Spanish and I have no clue what they are saying. I know scattered words in French and a bunch of other languages. And I can do the alphabet in Sign Language(learned it to talk in class) but that's pretty disappionting considering we have a book that teaches Sign Language.
But to sound smart I'll say I can count to ten in three languages(Welsh, English, and Spanish(I can even count a little farther in Spanish and English ). And I can count to three in four languages(Welsh, English, Spanish, French) Make that 4 and 5 if you count Sign Language. He he!

I will try to learn spanish as well . at the moment I have to learn Finnish because I am going on an exchange to Finnland next summer

I'm fluent in my first language, American English and I can understand most Spanish pretty well but I can't speak it. (Verb conjugations SUCK!) I should have been fluent seeing as it was my father's first language and that my grandfather speaks nothing BUT Spanish and I've been around Spanish speakers my entire life, but hey that whole "THIS IS AMERICA!! English is what you need" thing, my parents only use it when they don't want us to understand what they are saying. (Too bad I do anyways lol!)
