I was reading the fourth book again and I thought that he may be a vampire. I went online and saw that other people think the same thing. Here is what I think:
* This is what clicked for me.. Ron said something about how Snape couldn't get down their if he was a bat. Vampires turn into bats. So, I was looking through other books and saw that he was introduced as "bat like."
Here are some other reasons that some people suggested..
* Snape made an essay about werewolves to make Lupin angry or something. Then, when Harry was coming back from Hogsmade, Lupin tells Snape he has to talk to Haryr about a vampire essay. Don't 'ya hate payback?
* Description: Rather pale, gaunt face, batlike cloak, hollow eyes. But he can see light and go outside. Maybe his face is greasy because he puts on some protection from the sun?
* There are a lot of people who are other creatures: Hagrid, Lupin, Snape..?
Sounds far-fetched, but, eh, with JKR, anything could happen.

Another thing, JK may envision vampires as not having to be hurt, or destroyed by sunlight. I know that not every person's views on vampires include them dieing by sun light. A good example of that is for you to watch the movie 'The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen'. The vampire in that movie was not affected by sunlight.
Then again, some people beleive that vampires only get stronger with age. Take Anne Rice for example. She wrote The Vampire Chronicles. In her series in her series vampires don't get burrned by the sun any more after so many years in existence. She also claimes if a vampire is sired by an extremely powerful vampire, then the new fledgeling is almost as powerful. But if the new vampire is sired by a young vampire, then he isn't that powerful, and only about as powerful as it's maker.
Basically my point is people view vampires differently then other people. So, it all goes on by what the author of HP has to say it does.
I think he is one though, although I used to not think so.

Interesting, I have read this theory before but havn't really considered it. I suppose because I am half way through Interview With a Vampire, i must pause to reflect. JKR is definitly leaving hints. I have to agree with Chris tho. There is so many different perspectives of what vampires are/look like. One big point in Anne Rice's stories, are that the character's do not age physically. Also Rice disperses with alot of the "Myth's" about vampires as well.
I think the "Bat" thing is stupid. mainly because only 0.3% of the bats in the world, actually suck blood, and usually livestock blood at that. I think a more accurate "animagi" form of a vampire would be a mosquito;)
The only thing I can focus on, as this being important, is the importance. With Snape being a "Vampire" how will it effect the story? How will it effect the characters? We have seen no sight of it thus far in the series. I can't see JKR making Snape a vampire for no reason. With this i brood.

I didnt think so either Chris - but - Andi makes good points for his case...
The other thing is there arent all that many references to Snape being outside in the sun at all. He seems to be the indoors type always lurking about at night time in the corridors.
But I agree, there is no rule that says Vampires die in the sunlight anyway, so it just depends on how it is perceived.
He could well be a Vampire - JKR mentions bits and pieces about Vamps throughout the books, yet we havent heard of anyone being one.... yet.

Locke - Being a Vampire, especially if he can turn into a bat could be priceless in being a spy. Maybe thats what Dumblenut meant when he said to Snape (end of GOF) 'you know what you have to do' (dont quote me exactly on that, I dont have the book here to reference the exact line).

Locke, Snape as a mosquito LOL.... I think the Snape as a vampire theory definetely has merit. It would go along with the theme of Lupin as a werewolf and Hagrid as a giant (tolerance for other beings and all). Here is the only thing that bothers me. Snape gets Lupin fired by disclosing his little secret. Dumbledore certainly knows Snape is a vampire (if he is one) and perhaps Lupin knows or suspects. Why would Snape feel safe ratting out Lupin if Lupin could turn around and do the same to him? I think that vampires in the wizard world have an equally bad rep. as werewolves. Except for this, I really like the idea. I also like Lilmissmalfoys observation that maybe Snape spys for the order as a bat, although that seems a lot less dangerous to me than if he is doing it in human (or in Snapes case - subhuman) form.

Actually, we get a look at JKR's vampires in book 3. She describes Sirius's complexion as waxy and to be very gaunt with hollow eyes - looking like the pictures Harry had seen of vampires in his textbooks. Somehow I don't think this fits Snape. His skin is sallow (sort of mediteranean) and he is describes as thin, but never gaunt. His eyes aren't hollow either. I don't doubt him being an animagi, but I seriously think that he is spying on the Death Eaters as one of them . Not in secret. They all trust him including Voldemort. He had said as much to Harry during the Occlumency lesson that he could lie freely to the dark Lord.

Hmm, i just assume that Snape has the "Dark Mark" engraved into his forearm, and Voldemort would be able to sense his presence regardless of the fact of if he was an animagi or not, i dunno. I tought about the tattling thing too, but Lupin seems to have integrity, so maybe he wouldn't tell even if he knew. I dunno.
Oh, and Narc to give you some competition...I think that Dumbledore meant for Snape to get down on his knees and....mr malfoy...blank blank....thats just my guessing....something to do with browning up the complexion of his nose.

1) Warewolves seem to be feared. Why? Because when they are in wolf form they aren't in control, the wolf is. And we don't know it is a normal wolf. A normal wolf in actuality will not attack if it does not feel provoced or threatened. JKR, for all we know, may have vampires be only physically differnt, meaning they would be in control of their actions the whole time.
2) A vampire, well a vampire doesn't have to neccecerily be evil. We don't know JKR's explenation of a vampire. Doesn't have to be evil at all. And, some theorys have vampires eating (or drinking rather) animals. So, they don't have to stick strictly to humans meaning they don't have to be evil.
I had another one, but I'm on a brain freez now lol...
Locke, how far are you on Interview with the Vampire? Do you like it?

Wow, this is one of the oldest theories on the board. The original board came up with it only a few months after I joined (right after GoF came out), and then I've heard it about 50-60 times since (not an exaggeration). We even came up with our own word for it: Snapire.
Mari is the best at this as she knows a lot of vampire myth. Anything I know comes off of her (believe me, I don't think even the vampire professor/historians at Santa Barbara's vampire studies class knows as much as Mari on vampires). But one thing is noticeable- there is no stereotypical vampire. You have the Buffy theories (no soul, demon animating a dead body, etc), Bram Stoker's classic vampire (short imps outside Dracula, fear water, drink blood, turn into bats, must sleep in their native soil, can go into sunlight, etc.), the Anne Rice view (have souls, power with age, just merely immortal, although seemingly the same person as they were in life), and the list goes on. JKR has plenty of room to form her own vampire, whether it be a Day-walker (vampire-mortal, which means Snape could have aged and continue to age, go into sun, eat, etc.), or her own creation.

AHHH the never ending "Snape is a Vampire" theory! I never know what to think! When the idea first started floating around I was completely convinced that it was true! After a while, I was back and forth with the idea. Now, I am almost completely sure he is not a Vampire. Why? Just a hunch. No real evidence to support it, just that it seems like to easy a clue for JKR to keep putting in front of us. Now there is the line in GoF where Percy says something in reference to Vampires and that they are "Non-Wizard Part Human" or something to that effect (no copy of GoF available!) So that would mean Vampires are not considered to be Wizards and could not be allowed a wand. But, Lupin is a Werewolf and he is still allowed a wand, so wouldn't a Vampire as well? Too many contradictions.

Snape is so much fun to discuss because he could be ANYTHING.
Here's another possibility (probably an old one again, Helen) Snape could be half vampire. If vampires can sire children in JKR's world then it might be possible. If Snape was born to a vampire and a witch for example, he could be a wizard and also have vamp. characteristics. And, I agree, the vampire concept is so wide open that any set of attributes is possible. Snapes potion making abilities could provide him with a way to suppress any blood sucking tendencies he might have. It could also be a red herring.
I really prefer the Snape as Voldemorts son theory if it comes to it. I think that's got more possibilities.
If Snape isn't Voldemorts son, then I hope he is a vampire because that would be interesting.

I think making Snape a vampire would be interesting, because, to me, Snape is getting rather dull. I know that he is a spy and all of that stuff, but I found it old in OoTP. I'll probably get flamed, but he isn't cutting it for me.
I want more conflict from him.

you know what we need....a SW theme relived in the HP universe....Snape and Lily are brother and sisters...twins, even...and there father is the evil Lord Voldemorte...Harry is the descendent of both Salazar Slytherin and Godric Griffindor, so the force is strong in him...it would explain why lily is nice to snape....hehe.
And Chris i am 150 pages into IWV, and it is now on my top 10 list for books(I have read over 100 or so).

MadEye, did you ever see my post about Snape possibly being Voldemort's son? It was my first post on this board. There is actually quite a bit of evidence to support it. I know people now REALLY get annoyed with it because people started coming up with "Harry's Voldemort's son", "Snape and Lily are siblings", etc. theories. It annoyed people to the point they wanted to ban all theories that stated one character was related to another. But most of those theories had no evidence in them. There are clues here and there in the book about Snape, although I can't remember them all right now (some resemblance, the dark magic knowledge, SS, JKR's interview hints about Snape, etc.).
And when I say this, remember the age factor- Voldemort would not have been transformed into what he became at the time of Snape's birth. Tom Riddle would still be around, not Voldemort in his current state.

The Snape as a vampire theory... I don't think he's a vampire, but I always go back and forth with this one. I like the idea of him as a bat animagi more, I really do think he is some kind of an animagi. Whether it's legitimate, unregistered, or even some kind of dark magic, he needs some way of spying other than just walking up to Voldey and saying, "I'm on your side, really!" Being an animagi seems like an excellent way of doing that.

Okay, I tried this twice! Both times I tried this Network 54 froze up once I hit respond, and then AOL booted me deleting what I wrote! Let's give this just one more try...
Okay, I have another theory supporting the Snapire one (Helen, love that word lmao!). Ligimacy and Occlamacy. I haven't read the HP book in a while, so can someone tell me what the difference between them are (and tell me how to correctly spell them lmao)?
Well, Snape is supposed to be real good at those, am I right? That is why he was teaching Harry it. I know it has something to do with mind reading, controling the mind, and defending yourself from mind attacks.
I'm reading the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice right now, so I'm going to use that as an example (like I keep doing since it is fresh on my mind lol). Well, in her novels (and I'm sure in other vampire mystery and folk lure) vampire can comunicate with the mind, read other's thoughts, and can control other's thoughts. Some, the more powerful ones and old ones can even move things with their minds and create fires.
Well, let's put that together with HP's occlumcy and legimacy (again with the spelling on my part...). Maybe Snape isn't as talented as we think. Maybe it's something else and he passes it off for that. Maybe, being a vampire, his powers include those in which I mentioned above, explaining why he can fool Albus and/or Voldemort (because either way he is fooling one of them...unless they secretly know he is lyeing, but that's something else ALL together).
Locke, speaking of The Vampire Chronicles, are you going tor ead the rest of the series? If so feel free to read and respond to the thread on my book club. Amanda started it, I beleive. We (Amanda and I) are reading the whole series together. But watch out, their are unmarked spoilers in the thread (since nobody else has yet to care tor ead the thread). I would only recomend readin The Vampire Lestat if you want to read The Queen of the Damned after that. I'd tell you why, but I don't know if you like spoilers or not.

Hmm, I never considered that Snape could be an animagi until I read this thread. Actually if he isn't a vampire, then him being a bat one would throw us off. If he isn't a vampire I'd like him to be a bat. It'd keep us guessing more and more and then line us up for a surprise.

Ya Helen, you and I actually had the 'Voldy as Snapes father' conversation a while back. I had mentioned the possibility and some of my observations and you had explained your theories on the subject, which were very enlightening. I like the theory because I think the evidence is rather good. Given the scope of the books and how the 'mystery' is going to intensify toward the end, every possible 'relation' scenario is bound to be put forward, but as you say, most don't have any real support in the canon. For example, the Lily and Snape as siblings theory seems to always be based on Liliys reaction to Snape yelling at her in the 'Snapes Worst Memory' scene. I can't quite read that much into her reaction.
Here's another point I had been thinking about. Dumbledore statrs out as the kindly, smart, all knowing wizard. By the end of book five, I have a sense that Dumbledore is manipulating peole, such as Harry, to achieve an end (the overthrow of Voldemort). Although its a noble end, its still distastful to have someone doing this to Harry, a child. Its a bit like stage mothers or parents who push their kids too hard in sports. Harry is being led into various amounts of danger to toughen him up for the final battle. At least that's how it looks to me.

Ender's Game all over, now that I think about it. In that story, Ender is a 11 year old, and the "teachers" of a battle school, deliberatly set up obstacles physical and mental, that actually damage the kid, so he becomes what they want, a weapon.
Now that I think about it, I have no doubt that Dumbledore isn't manipulating Harry. I mean he has known about the prophecy this whole time, while no one else has. He knows this is whay Harry was "born" for.
And your not the only one chris, Alot of my gaming buds are having problems with AoL, they all hope it will go under, but then they will be forced to switch ISPs...so its kinda lose lose, either way.

I do think we'll be seeing a bit of a darker side to Dumbledore in the last books. Right now, he is like this God figure- all powerful, completely good, no darkness can touch him, and absolutely ideal. We're supposed to believe that he is fallible only because he kept the prophecy from Harry, but even then, the entire scene played him out to be omnipotent and omniscent- he defeats the world's strongest Dark wizard with a mere flick of the wand and knows everything about everything. It's too ideal. Just because he never told Harry about a prophecy doesn't show him to be fallible- just a bit naive since he knew Voldemort was luring Harry on. So I think it's well time for Dumbledore to make a major mistake that affects everyone, and I think that's going to be with Snape. Whether Snape is a vampire or Voldemort's son, I think we'll find that Dumbledore's trust was misplaced and Harry's suspicions were justified all along.

Helen, I have to disagree. I think that JKR will have readers wondering who is right about Snape for a long time, but eventually she will have Dumbledore be right. It just doesn't seem to fit in with Dumbledore's character to be wrong about Snape and have Harry be right. And Harry's becoming so arrogant lately...I want to see him time after time put back in his place.

I think Dumbledore has to be shown to be fallible. I think it is part of the theme that no one and nothing is 'fairy-tale' perfect. He has shown that he's not perfect in his holding back of information from Harry that would possibly have kept Harry out of the Dept. of Mysteries. What Dumbledore does or doesn't tell Harry in the next book may tell us all how fallible Dumbledore really is. What Snape is, and if he's trustworthy will probably be Dumbledore's big mistake.

I have to agree with MadEye (and myself). Yes, Harry was angrier in the last book. He was becoming your average teenage boy who deals with far more problems than most. I was annoyed with Harry, but I don't think that means he should be wrong just to be put back into his place. He had every right to be angry, even if he did take it out a little more harshly than I would expect.
But Harry's attitude is a completely separate issue for me. My main issue is Dumbledore. He is so perfect and ideal that it drives me insane. This figure is JKR's God. He never makes a mistake. He never runs into any problems. Even when he's about to be arrested by the Ministry, he simply takes out his wand, takes everyone out at once, then peacefully walks away. He can command anyone, tells Fudge he's automatically going to be Headmaster again without any word from Fudge, and everyone instantly listens. I don't agree with Fudge at all, but it seems like Dumbledore has far more authority than even the person who runs the country (not just power- authority). Everything he says is taken as absolute fact. You have Hermione saying "Dumbledore says..." and that be the end of the discussion, as if Dumbledore's opinion is suddenly divine law. I want to see him be wrong on something, and something that's a little more significant than "I forgot to mention this prophecy to you earlier, but here it is now." Otherwise, every reader will just assume that if Dumbledore says something, they shouldn't even question it, because he's god in the stories and never can be wrong.
Sure puts a close on many theories if you take it like that.

For 12 years he thought Sirius guilty. He originally suspected Sirius before anything happened - he didn't want Lily and James to use him as a secret keeper.
He couldn't tell that Mad Eye Moody was really Barty Crouch.
He hired Lockhart.
He didn't know what Quirrel was up to.
He's far too protective of Harry. He's kept him in a bubble for so long, and that is a huge mistake.

I just love it when we talk about Snape! What an amazingly complex and engigmatic character! Of all the characters in the series, I think Snape is perhaps the most talked about. I think I have my hopes too high for him in the end though! I feel almost certain that he is not really on either side, but using which side is most to his advantage at the time. Perhaps in the end it won't be so easy for him to play both sides and something will happen that will force him to choose between Dumbledore or Voldemort. I read somewhere that JKR has entire backgrounds laid out for all her characters, that readers don't need to know about. It more for her to use for writing only. So, somewhere out there is Snape's whole story all the way back to his childhood. Man, would I love to get a hold of that!
Snape is the best! I was sold on him as my favorite character as soon as he called everyone "dunderheads." There is a fantastic Snape site call Designerpotions.com/ss it has everything (and then some) about Snape as well as fantasic theories and sluething, Check it out!

Ya, Helen and Narc, exactly right on.... if Dumbledore is right all the time and all powerful, then why doesn't he just take Harry off, teach him how to kill Voldemort and then set up the 'perfect' trap and have it over with. Or better, yet, why not kill Voldemort himself. If Dumbledore is perfect, then there truly is nothing to worry about. However, Dumbledore is clearly worried. There's a lot more room for error here than people like Hermione can see. Harry can see it, from the few brief, but enlightening conversations he has had with Dumbledore.
Again, there is a whole theme in the books about how people react to the shallow, one-dimentional information they get from the news (Daily Prophet) or in Hermiones case, from books. The press rarely provides the whole story. The wizard community never seems to question Dumbledores motives, methods or authority. Dumbledore is like a god in the wizard world because he has done some very remarkable things but......well.......(I like this quote, don't know the author) " Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement". Dumbledore surely hasn't made the perfect choices everytime, and he isn't going to in the future either. He is very wise, and that's partly because he MADE choices and faced the consequences, and learned things in the process.
Also, you don't see Harry running to Dumbledore to sort out every issue that Harry has, in fact, he goes to Dumbledore less than he probably should. Harry is also making choices and learning from them. That's why I could see Harry as the next "Dumbledore - star of the wizard world".

When Dumbledore dies (or if), I think Harry will be ready because he has not been relying on him so much. But I would love to see Snape betray Dumbledore while Dumbledore is still very much in the battle. With both Lockhart and Quirrel, Dumbledore never said he was wrong. With Barty Crouch, he never said "I was wrong not to suspect it", only "I knew instantly when...". The only time Dumbledore has ever actually admitted he was wrong was with the prophecy, and even then, he tried to justify it heavily. I'd like to see him so dramatically wrong that it actually has world-spread consequences that affect everyone. Right now, he either doesn't own up to his mistakes, they're too minor to care about, or they have a limited impact. Dumbledore is therefore about as infallible as you can get in this book. I'd like to see him make such a drastic mistake that he can admit to Harry that Harry was right from the beginning and that it should have been Dumbledore who listened to Harry, instead of Harry always listening to Dumbledore. That could be the scene where Harry learns he can make it on his own without Dumbledore should Dumbledore die...that he doesn't need this god character around to make any decision...that he can, and SHOULD, listen to himself and not just dronishly follow the advice of others.

Well, Helen, when you put it like that, the 'mistake' would almost have to be his trust in Snape. Voldey is evil and everyone know it. Everyone aslo knows what the Death-Eaters are likely to do, so Snape is the one 'wild card' because he is in a postion to turn on the Order. Of couse, there might be someone one else that Dumbledore has trusted unwisely, someone who is flying under the radar, but the result would be the same.
I'm really conflicted about Snape. The only way I can see him as truly evil is if he is planning his own overthrow of Voldemort, and I don't know that he has that in him. I don't think he likes being bossed around by Dumbledore or Voldemort, so I have a hard time seeing him as loyal to either side.
