Has anyone read this book?? I may be behind the times on this one a little, because I have never really read any sci-fi/fantasy type books. But, a fellow employee suggested it after he found out how much I enjoy the HP books. It is a really fantastic book. The author was only fifteen yrs old when he wrote it. Amazing work. Again, if this book has been discussed before, forgive me, I usually have my nose buried in a cheesy romance novel (please forgive for that offense as well!)

Eragon is written by Christopher Paolini. The inside of the jacket says this "When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legandary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands..."

It sounds sort of like the Anne McCaffrey Dragon books. I don't remember the real name of the series. If you read it and like it, give us a review. I'd give it a try.
Has anyone read His Dark Materials (not sure thats the exact title) ?

Hey, the kid who wrote this book was on Letterman last night. Seemed like kind of a dork, but still a good writer for such a young age! So, I guess that makes the book fairly new and I am not behind the times after all.

If you like magic and or fantasy another good series is: Guardian of the Balance Merlin's Descandant # 1-4 By Irene Radford. There are four books, I would rate this book pg13.
Here is a description of Guardian of the Trust, book 2.
"England at the begining of the 13th century, a tumultuos era when John Plantagenet is King. In this time of the unrest both within and outside the kingdom-a period when nobles seek greater power and independence from there ruler, and both John and realm are place under interdiction by the pope-evil and unjustice are rife in the land. For there is a champion of darkness in the very heart of John's court, Radburn Blakely, Illegitmate half brother to the king and grandson of demon choas. And while Blakely weaves his spells about John, there is no on who can challenge his hold over the king.
But there are remains another far older royal line hidden within the land, the descendants of Arthur Pendragon and of Merlin's daughter Arylwen. In Lord Henry Griffin, the current Pendragon, and his Great-niece Resmiranda Griffin, both Arthur's and Merlin's magic runs strong. And the need for strength is great indeed. For soon both king and kingdon will fall to eveil's dominion unless someone can work the old enchantments to vanquish the demon and his disiples from mortal realm.
Blakey is aware of his enimies long before they had the knowledge of his true identity. And while Resmiranda is still a young child, he sets out to destory the Griffin's and seize their power for himself. Thus begins Resmiranda's fugitive. Concealed by friends her of the family, sheltered in isolated convents, the child grows to adulthood without the chance to fully discover the special magic that is hers from birth.
Despite Blakely's best efforts Resmiranda survives, becoming a young woman determined to take respnsibilties to which she is heir. When a desperate and deadly attack claims the lives of her protectors and nearly takes hers as well, Resmiranda is saved by the gallent efforts of Hugh Fitz Chenenoir, a man she has every reason to mistrust.
Only time will prove whether or not Hugh is her staunchest alley or a mercenary who will deliver her into the her enemy's hands. Yet time is no friend to Resmiranda. For unless she can escape John's courtand Blakely's clever trap, she will never have the opportunity to master the ancient arts and gain the Pendragon's most precious means of fighting the forces of choas. And will never be able to free her beloved land and people from demon's malevolent rule..."

Dragonriders of Pern...Thanks Locke, you're right. I read 2 or three of these years ago. They were pretty light-weight. Kind of a deal where the dragons chose you or they don't, and the unsuspecting heroine gets a calling. If I re-call the first books are short on character development. I didn't read on. I think she wrote quite a few.

You sold me! I was out with my friend at Wal*Mart, at like 1 AM but that's besides the point. He's rather on the rich side and asked if I wanted anything. Well I was just browsing by the book section and I saw that book, Eragon by Christopher Paolini. So I bought it! Yep, good job, you sold me into reading it!
I also walked out with three other books. I got Timeline by Michael Crithon, The Silmarillion , & The Hobbit, both by J.R.R. Tolkien. Now that I have The Hobbit I can start the LOTR series (once I finish the other books on my endless list...)!
Chris, Timeline is a great book, but not such a great movie.
National Public Radio (NPR) was going to do a story on "Eragon" the other day, but I missed it. Since they don't just pick up any old book and do a piece on it, I would guess that it's got something special to offer. Has anyone read it yet?

Now, I did see the movie Timeline backw hen it came out (either opening day, or the direct day after, I really don't remember). I absolutely loved the movie. But, I never read the book, so I ahve nothing to compare it to. I may think the movie sucks once I read it. But until then I'll stick with I loved it lol.
I have only recently heard about this one, but admit to being VERY curious. Be sure, you guys who are reading it, to let us know how you liked it. I'm always questing after more good reading (like I have time to get through my current list as it is... oh well).
When I went to Barnes and Nobles they had a whole table of hardcover books on display for this one. I was under the impression that it wasn't a new realease though, just from the way you were talking about it. Now I'm really confused, how long ago did this book come out?

*Digs out book after he had just rearanged his whole out of order book shelf to make room* ...It was originally published ina different form (maybe different cover, who knows) in 2002. But the copywrite this book is 2003. Does that help?
Yeah, I thought this was a great book! He is writing it as three part series. Book two is currently being written, I guess. I was just amazed that he wrote Eragon so young! I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did! Keep me posted on how you all likes it.
P.S. Sandy, I don't normally read fanfic, but I checked yours out late one night while online and was up till three in the morning reading all of it! Fantastic job! Can't wait to read more!!! How many chapters do you think it will come out to in the end?

Yeah, I actually saw that when I was looking threw the cover and a few pages about it being a trillogy. If it is good I'm glad it's a series, but I honestly didn't know it was. It also gave the kids web site about him and the book. I haven't checked it out yet, but here is the address anyway: http://www.alagaesia.com
And the next volume of the books is called "Eldest".
Okay, now I'll definitely have to read it. Of course, he's so young, it may just get me all frustrated since I can't get the nerve to send even my short stories out to anyone to see if they'll publish. Gah. Oh well. I can always use a good read.
Severus, thanks so much for reading my rapidly-getting-enormous fic! At this point, I think I am looking at about 20 chapters overall. Of course, my outline has been shifting around a bit lately. I tell my characters we have a plot point to get to and they just go wandering off wherever they feel like going. Remus and Annwyl are the two worst! Sometimes I feel like putting up literary babygates to try keeping them in line!
*Can everyone tell Sandy was up late last night finishing chapter 12? At least it has been sent to Moriah for beta reading and, for the moment, isn't Sandy's problem...*
Hey Sparklestar, I saw the same pile of books at Barnes and Noble. I was in there about a week ago (west side store). There were a group of people in the store discussing HP -just standing around - any chance you were there?
The book must be fairly new because they told me it was not available in paperback yet. I wasn't sure I wanted to spend $20.00 on it at the time, but now I guess I should get it.
Side question: has anyone read the Artemis Fowl books?

I have never read Artemis Fowl, but understand they are pretty good. There have also been different people on the board recommending Lemony Snicket at different times, but I haven't gotten around to those either.
My copy of Angels and Demons just arrived from Amazon.com, so that will be my next reading project. For those of you who have not yet read The Da Vinci Code, this was the precursor, although it seems it isn't vital to read them in order. The Da Vinci Code was great, although a few details of his church history were a little questionable. Nothing major, however. VERY interesting book.
No, that wasn't me, but that would have been so weird if it was.
I have read the Artemis Foul books, and I love them. They're right next to Harry Potter and LotR on my bookshelf. Colfer does such a nice job of mixing technology and magic, and it really creates a unique book.

Artimus Fowel and Lemoney Snicket... Who are they? I've heard the name Lemoney Snicket before, probably here, and when I see books by him they are ALWAYS plopped down right next to the Harry Potter books at book stores. In fact I know I saw that name here once, but I have no freaking clue who he is. For a while I actually thought he was some minor character in Harry Potter and someone decided to write some books under that characters name. I thought that because I was sure I saw the name either here or in one of the books (obviously here though) and no matter where I go they are plopped next to Harry. Am I going mad? ...So, what did those two write? When I saw Lemoney at the book store, he had three boxed sets and each set had three books. So at least 9 books. Basically what are those stories about?
MadEye, don't spend the $20. Do you have a Wal*Mart near you? They have it for $14. Well $13.88 but close enough after sales tax obviously.
That brings up another question. Does anyone live in an area where they do NOT have to pay sales tax on books? My state's sales tax is 5% of every doller and books go in that same bracket apparently.
Alright, I'm supposed to be studying for finals, so I may as well procrastinate a little bit more.
Chris, Lemony Snicket is the author of A Series of Unfortunate Events. You have probably herad of those, most people really like them, I myself didn't like them very much, but whatever. Artemis Fowl is a fictional character, but there are three books out right now called Artemis Fowl; Artemis Fowl and the arctic incident; and Artemis Fowl and the eternity code. The author is Eoin Colfer, the books are just named after one of the protagonist... (ummm antagonist? dependng on which way you look at it) Hope that answers your question.

I've read A Series of Unfourtunte Events (the lemony snicket books) and I think their really good. Anyway Eargon sounds like a really cool book. Next time I'm at Barnes and Noble I'm going to check it out.

Chris, you are brilliant. You are out with a rich friend buying books, and you don't even think of the one we need for the book club....

Me: Well, i'm going to go. I'm going out for pizza. I just found a toonie on the floor, so why not use it?
Sorry for making this the thread that won't die, but I thought I'd add something:
Since so many people seem to be interested in this book, Eragon, I added it to the list of books to vote on for my book club. So if anybody is still interested in reading this one you can go vote for it and then read it with us.
Chris, i'm glad you brought this up again, now I can comment on it.
I got Eragon, and im about 2/3 done with it. All I have to say is this book is trully amazing, I was intrigued by it after reading only the first chapter. The fact that it was written by a fifteen year old astounds me, if you didn't know how old the author is, you would never guess that it wasn't written by a very famous and prestegious novelist. I would deffinitly reccomend it.

I'm glad to hear that because at the moment that book is winning in the vote lol. You planning on joining in on the book club this time around if it wins?
Well, I've read the first few chapters. Not sure how many I've actually read to be honest. Not very far into it though. The first chapter was definatly their to get your interest in it right away. Well the next few chapters were kind of slow pased, but it wasn't bad enough for me to give up on it. Plus MadEye warned me it's kind of slow at first but you eventually get into it a few chapters in, and then you are hooked. Anyone else have the same opinion as that?
