Had to go see this movie! You know they did a good job with it when you are on the edge of your seat hoping the U.S. will beat the Rooskies, when you already know they do.

I recall this moment from my childhood (would have been 4, almost 5.) This is what actually got me into Hockey as a kid. I distinctly remember telling my parents I wanted to be a goalie when I grew up. Sadly, they thought it was so cute that a girl wanted to play hockey. I have really lost touch with the hockey world the last few years for a number of reasons 1. becoming a wife and mom. 2. Living in Kentucky didn't help. Not exactly hockey territory! But this movie really has brought up the love for the game again! I live close to Chicago now, so perhaps I can catch a few Blackhawk games.

Even if you are not a hockey fan, this is a very up lifting and inspirational movie. Go see it!

Being Canadian, I am a little disapointed that it is between USA and Russia. I think the greatest series of all time was the summit series. But you know hollywood, gotta use USA so everyone will go see it.

Kinda reminds me of the world war movies.(No offence or anything...) The USA is also made glorious in them, I don't particularly know why.

Okay, I SOOOOOOO don't want this thread to turn into a "Why Americans Are Annoying to Those Who Aren't American" thread.

Locke, you are talking about movies made, primarily, for a U.S. audience.  In this case, this particular hockey match-up was a VERY big deal to the US.  Truthfully, I remember it, but not overly well since we have never been big hockey fans in our household (don't throw things people - I never said I never watch hockey.  I just don't watch often).  It was a huge thing for national pride.  That was not a time of easy relations with what was then the USSR (as some of you can remember first hand and the rest may have heard in history classes).  So, that is why it was a big deal.  In this case, it was much more than a great hockey game.

As for the WWII films, Locke, I give you the same answer.  They were made for US audiences.  Did you really thing they would stress the contributions of the Canadian troops?

Locke, that is the whole point of the movie. The USA beating the USSR. Overcoming the enormous odds that were against them. The movie is about the 1980 olympic hockey team and how they won. Why would it be about anything else but the USA beating the Russians and then going on to win a gold medal.

Hockey. Oh boy. I've grown up with it! OK I'm only 16 but since I was 4 maybe I've always gone to hockey games. I have three brothers (21, 18, and 10) and each of them has had their share of hockey. The 18 year old has played for 10 years! He's actually playing for the Cleveland Jr Lumberjacks right now... very cool, I think.

I used to want to play hockey a few years ago... but my brothers kept telling me I couldn't. Grr... then before my brother left for Cleveland he gave me flyers for girl's hockey teams around us. Eh. Wish I had them a few years ago, heh.

I've never even heard of this movie.

I don't take offence to any of it, but then again I don't consider myself a true Canadian. In Olympic Hockey we get all of the American team's best players anyways, because they're mostly greedy former Canadians who moved on to a WAAAY bigger salary than we can offer, marry a supermodel, or in Gretzky's case, a mediocre actress... It's sad, we might lose the Flames because of this, though Fluery is trying to beg his way back (JUST SAY NO!).

Peter - before you make fun of the Flames - they won the Stanley in '88. When was the last time the Maple Laughs did this? Hmmm? My dad was at the game in Edmonton when Steve Smith scored on his own net! I wish I was old enough to remember that.

(I just read my words... how can you tell I havae the coffee jitteres?)

Annonymous:

Some advise on posting here - don't cowardly hide behind a fake name - if you want to argue a point, do it, but USE YOUR NAME.

We know geography quite well up here, do you? Are you aware at how much Hollywood has been flaming Canada lately because so many producers have been filming in Canada rather than Hollywood because it is cheaper? Sorry to tell you this, but many of the newer filns you've been watching haven't actually been filmed where you are led to believe. Plenty of the westerns that are supposed to be taking place in Texas are actually filmed 90 kms (about 55 miles to you) from here in a place called Drumheller.

The reason Locke is disapointed is basically because many Canadians feel ripped off that our National game has been taken (before anyone tears my ass off for this - I am not one of these people, just sating what I see a LOT here).

We are losing our teams. We have lost the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, and a few others that I can't remember the names of because I'm not a huge follower like most Canadians. Personally I think that to save the foundations the NHL should donate some of the megabucks they get back into hockey.

(edited to say - I know that this rivalry has nothing to do with the Russian rivalry, and anada wouldn't have a place in that movie - but the Annonymous poster pissed me off with the Hollywood stupidity comments)

narcissa im sorry if you dont like me or something i cant do anything about it, but canada's teams cant afford to play in leagues anymore thats not the leagues fault its the owners and the fans. If fans go to support the team and buy the memorabilia or however you spell it (sorry not a big vocab fan) then canada wouldnt lose teams. Trust me when i say this im not bashing the fans, i myself have never been to a hockey game in canada but i have been to baseball games and not many people go out to them.

im sorry if you see things different but dont dislike me for different views

There is no lacking of Canadian team fans. The Saddledome's seats are always full. Last year the Devils won the Stanley and during the final games there were hundreds of empty seats! Don't even try and say there isn't a fanbase. The teams get much of their earnings from Government, Broadcasting, merchandising etc, what they get from fans actually going to the games is peanuts.

Like i said i never went to a hockey game in canada, but the expos seats are deff not taken up ive gone to many games at the olympic stadium, and theres no less then 5000 people there. And yes the fans do make alot of money for the team, every jersey someone buys for the team, the team gets money. The reason why the meadowlands seats were not taking up was because its a dump. I have season tickets to the devils and its a piece of junk. Why do you think the nets are leaving? because its heaven? noo because fans dont go anymore.

im not trying to make you hate me i dont want you to hate me, im just speaking my views.

Hmmmm. Casey, you aren't even making a valid arugument when you use Canadian organizations as an example and then start on about the Meadowlands, which isn't even a Hockey venue. If you are new to the board, then welcome. It is always a good idea to read the Newcomers post. If you read that then I think you will understand what Narc is trying to get across to you. Try not to get to defensive.

Hockey is a completly Canadian sport (the only sport I actually enjoy) and nobody can convince me that it hasn't been taken over by Americans. I think it is indeed sad what has happened to the Canadian NHL teams. I thank Canada for such a great sport and that they share it with the rest of us!

hockey is a great sport. And thank you for welcoming me, but ive been here before a while ago tho. What do you mean by the meadowlands not being a hockey venue? I mean i know its not all hockey but it was built for the devils! I never had the intent of starting an argument with narcissa, all i was saying was that since hollywood makes the movies about an american event, even if its ww2 or hockey, there not going to change it up becuase hockey was invented in canada. And a lot of great shows get taped in canada (ie: Blacksash, monk, Smallville, The real world:lost season lol sorry had to put that in there) i was never bashing canada or anything. So im sorry narc if you dont like me, but i would like to start over. Hi narc my names KC. and hi everyone else

WOW! Look what I walked in to...

Sarcasim aside I think I'll ignore the argument and just jump right in about the movie lmao!

Well, I'm an American who loves hockey. But I'll be the first to admit I don't really ever watch it, or go to games or anything. Hell I really don't know much about it (like all the technical terms and most of the rules), but I can follow it without asking questions about what is going on (which is more then I can say about football, baseball, and basketball). All that aside I'll say I really want to see this movie. I knew America did win, otherwise it wouldn't have been so much of a big deal to make a movie about it is my bet. But it still looked good enough to make me want to see it reguardless if I knew who was going to win or not.

Wow, look what I missed.

I apoligize, I probably should have formulated my word's in a more proper way. What I was trying to say was: that I am disappointed that Hollywood has limited it's sights to America. Sev, I realize what the movie is about, and it's great that it promotes a unity in the US. My point is that every hockey movie I watch is about America, it drives me nuts when its our sport.

As for you casey. Contraire to your beliefs, it is the "owners" who **** it up for us. There is no lack of fans. I have been playing hockey since I was 5, I have watched it since before that, heck I was named after it. And there is not 1 single person I know that doesn't root for a hockey team. How did you come across this knowledge of how teams make their money. I bet a hockey team doesn't make 2 buck off of a jersey. So i suppose if 500 000fans bought the jersey, that would pay the salary of a bench warmer for one season.

Sorry locke i wasnt dissing the fan support in canada because im not canadian (or is it canadien?), but around here yankee stadium charges 9 bux for a 20 oz. soda. They make their money off of fan support, with out fan support (yankees really arent a good example because steinbrenner has more money then well alot of people), well with out fan support they go broke and wont be able to pay the salaries.

Im sorry for stirring up trouble i had no intentions of that, its just that Sports management was my dads major he tought me alot of things about teams and how they make money.

Well, I don't really want to enter this fight, but I did want to make one point.  I was in college, I think, when this match happened.  I remember the conditions and the controversy about it.  The main thing at the time, was that the Russians were fielding(is that correct terminology for Hockey?) a team that was, for all intents and purposes, a professional team.  The USA was fielding a team of college kids that had never played together before.  The arguement was over what consituted an "even playing field" for Olympic sports, when some players were basically professionals and others were amatuers.  I think that any amatuer team that beat the Russian team that year would have been consisdered a "miracle" team, regardless of their nationality.

Mad-Eye, the Russian national team at that time had not been beaten by anyone for almost 20 years. Most of the team had been playing together for a good 15 years. Where as the American team was a group of college kids who had been playing together for 7 months. Also, the American team was made up of a lot of kids from Boston College and Univ. of Wisconsin. These two teams have a huge rilvary that goes way back.

"My point is that every hockey movie I watch is about America, it drives me nuts when its our sport"

Just because every hockey movie you see is about America doesn't mean we are taking over your sport or anything. The companies that have the most money to make films are usually American companies who make movies that Americans would want to see. Frankly, and I don't mean anything offensive to Canada, but I doubt too many Americans would want to see a movie about Canadian teams. Canadians are kinda a joke in the U.S. (not my opinion though, just note that) Kinda like a more wussy, prudish, and goody-goody America. I remember when Canada was reluctant about sending troops to Iraq people were saying stuff like "Canada? It wouldn't matter much if they helped or not, they're just Canada." and someone joked around saying "Canada has a military???" So to a lot of Americans, seeing a movie about Canadians would be a bit cheesy sounding and not too appealing, and the American public is generally what companies want to appeal to. Since America has such a huge grip on the industry, I guess you might just have to wait until there are more companies who want to appeal to the Canadian public. Which kinda sucks because I know a lot of people who want more movies that relate to them. Usually companies just re-wrap the movies that America has and ships them off to Canada exactly as they are because I guess they figure, they're nearby, talk relatively the same, countries are pretty similar so their wants are the same. Less work for them probably.

Michelle - do you watch Hockey at all? I think you might need to know, most of the star players on your American team are Canadian imports! Gretzky, Wendle Clark, Mario Lemiux, Doug Gilmour, Theron Fluery... I could go on.

And you may want to get your facts straight.

CANADA wanted to send our troops to help. Our Prime Minister didn't. MOST of the country felt we should. Yes, our Military is a joke, but seeing as we don't go in search of war - why would we need one? I think the last war we had was in 1812 or 1816 against the Americans. I don't think you want to know what happened, but if you do, find out why the White House was rebuilt.

"Kinda like a more wussy, prudish, and goody-goody America" Well... from what I've seen on American TV shows - the rest of the world is a joke to the Americans. You guys make fun of everyone. In Canada a lot of the jokes are about the Americans but strangely enough, it's a joke shared worldwide.

Its so true that Americans have blinders on in terms of how the rest of the world thinks.  We can get away with that because most Americans never leave this country.  They don't know people from other countries and don't hear news from other perpectives.  People from Canada, Europe, the Pacific Rim...generally have a much more even-handed view of world politics(in my opinion).  Our nationalism (unchecked) gets in the way of that.  Any time a person gets a chance to listen and discuss polictics or the world view with someone from another country, they would do well to take that opportunity.  Everyone on the planet has their own specific prejudices it's true.  However, much insight can be gained by seeing the world from lots of different points of view.

Lol, look at the Canadian Olympic Team, in Salt Lake City. Look at the roster...we fought at the start but triumphed in the end. Double gold! Notice any of your hockey heros in that roster?

As far as the "war" thing is concearned. Our military is a joke...yes, I have to say, compared to the USA it is. We don't pit enemies against us, so we don't need a large military...for the rest I'm going to just sit out.

Oh, and I almost forgot. YES, AMERICA IS STEALING "OUR" SPORT! I don't mind too much, so long as the Leafs keep playing, and it is legal to play a game of pick-up hockey.

Im sorry to all the blue jacket fans, im not hating them or taking a crack at them, all im saying is that there not like the red wings or stars, where everyone watches them, and there on tv like every wensday.

Casey, don't jump to conclusions. Just because people have different views or opinions, doesn't mean they can't get along. I don't "not like you". I was simple stating my opinion. I honestly think they are killing the sport by creating to many teams. I can't see an american owner sending a canadian team back...it would be nice to see the jets and quebec return at least, but meh.
