Yet he's playing a 35 year old man. Weird, huh?

While it would be nice if Snape was cast closer the the character's actual age, I think most would agree that Rickman does do the character justice (even those who dislike the movies.)

I mentioned in a post that I made about finding my perfect Harry that it took a lot of work to get the actors out of my head while I read the books. Snape is the one character that I still see in my head as the actor. Does that make any sense?! With only a couple months until the baby gets here I am starting to get very absentminded and clumsy. Some might argue that this is nothing new! 2 1/2 more months to go people!

I disagree..i think the characters that played McGonnagal and Hagrid, did a fine job, as well as pomfry, and filch. In fact, i'd say that the only characters in the movie that did't hold up to the rest of them are the children, and maybe dumbledore.

He did a good job. He could have done better but the scripting obviously didn't allow for it - like wishing Harry good luck in the Quidditch match was about as out of character for him as it would have been for McGonnagal to help Harry cheat - and the huge dramatic pause (which now I figure was supposed to be him using Occlumency) "would think you were............... UP to something!" - scripting again. He's a terrific actor, but they should have found someone younger. Because they went so much for big names and chose Rickman they had to get ugly Oldman for Sirius to fit the age group, and Toupee Lupin for the same reasons.

Rickman made (makes) a good Snape.  The only scene I really did'nt like him in was his first scene in COS.  His face looked all puffy and like he was sick or something.

As for the new charactors - Lupin and Sirius..surely the pool of '30 something' British actors is not so shallow that these guys were the best choices.

i think the scene where he is wishing good luck to harry is quite good and absolutely something he would do. In case you haven't noticed but it is called sarcasm...

and alan rickman is the only one who could fit in this character. and what does his age have to do with it?

And you have to admit the the scene of the first potions lesson in SS/PS was priceless

"and alan rickman is the only one who could fit in this character. and what does his age have to do with it?"

The fact that he was old enough to play Snape's father just disturbs the image slightly. In having an almost 60 year old man play a 30 something was stupid. Because of this they will now have very limited casting choices for Sirius (Garu OLDman - the name says it all) Lupin, Bellatrix and Rodulphus - all of whom were in Snape's year. Now they're all going to have to be older to look convincing as Snape's age because some idiot was more concerned about getting big names than filling the character's part.

Alan would have been perfect 20 years ago. He's not young anymore. Too bad he's gay, or perhaps he may have had a son that could have filled the part better. There are plenty of good, sarcastic british men that easily could have taken the part.

And personally I thought the first potions scene wasn't good. The way he stormed in and started talking - it almost sounded like he was singing.

Narc, that a very good point about Snapes age and the ages of his contemporaries such as Sirius.  I hadn't considered that.
