I haven't seen any of the movies nominated, so I can't really choose between them. All I know is that I want Johnny Depp to win for Pirates! I know it is a long shot, but he did get the Screen Actors Guild! I have always been bothered that certain types of movies/roles are overlooked for nominations. I always like to root for the underdog.

Pirates has been nominated for various other awards. All the nominees are listed on the oscars website:

I have to say, I have only seen 3 of the flicks on the list...I have heard of Mystic River and have not heard of the master commander...

I have to say a few things...

Lost in Translation was a rather decent flick, and while it picks on some of Japanese culture, I think it is fair to say that it does the same with western culture(i don't know why all the fuss). I watched it with a few friends, and they didn't like it, but funny...they watched it all...it was mesmorizing in that sense.

Seabuiscuit...booooooo! For several reasons...it was a typical underdog film, these are getting old and boring, come up with something original(like lost in translation). I thought toby did a crappy job. In fact I think Jeff Bridges held that movie together...along with the old trainer. It was a good movie, but it was like Days of Thunder...only horse version.

ROTK..my vote, and probably winner...it captured all the essence of the books(that it could), and it grabbed all the good things out of the series and threw them together...I'd say more blood was put into this movie, then the other contenders combined(but i havn't seen the other two so...i can't say for sure).

Sev, Im rooting for Johnny too, did you see him in Once Upon A Time? Two amazing performances released at same time - He along with a few other actors(brad pitt) - can be thrown into a role, and somehow bring it off. I think he is only an underdog, because it isn't really a full performance...i mean there are alot of good actors that are standing up besides him, taking just as much of a role in the movies.

Thats my two cents...

Also, i'm surprised Pirates wasn't nominated for best picture. If it was it would defianetly be my vote.

Locke, I did see "Once Upon a Time.." It was horrible! Johnny did a fantastic job playing his character but, in my opinion, he was the only good thing in that movie.

Are you kidding?

Blasphemy! Hehe...well for me it had everything i love...good gun fighting, good guitar playing...great soundtrack(i even bought it). Amazing roundup of actors(minus ugliesaassss). The plot kept twisting, i think it is the best gun fighting movie since the original Matrix.

Just my opinion tho.

I didn't like Once Upon a Time, but probably because I was on an overly horrible date at the time.

Johnny Depp wasn't nominated for best actor for Pirates, was he? I remember when the nominations were fist announced, Mari was shocked because his name wasn't on the best actor list. I'm not sure if they put his name up here, but you might want to check the official nominations again, because I thought he wasn't nominated for the Oscars.

And ROTK completely crushed Pirates. I LOVED Pirates, don't get me wrong, but I don't think any movie came close to ROTK this year.

I have to put in my two cents about this one....

I LOVED Once upon a time....

I think you have to like Quinton Terentino ( I know I just slaughtered his name) I love all of his stuff ( Kill Bill is wicked cool) There is a real dark humor, and a ton of action. I loved it

Locke, we're gonna get along just fine....

Just a side thought... Johnny Depp is usually very picky with the roles that he plays, and they are NEVER run of the mill charicters. I think he's some of the best talent in Hollywood history. But, I'm biased I liked 21 jump street too.... <blush>

Well, I think it's clear Johnny Depp got screwed. What surprised me was that if Depp didn't win, I thought for sure Bill Murray would have. Sean Penn was NOT on my list of winners. He was actually my last choice in that category.

I think Depp didn't win because of politics. He and the Academy have been at odds for a while.

I saw it after it started. I was happy with most of the outcomes, but that pissed me off that Depp didn't win. I didn't see any of the other movies that the actors were from in that catagory, but I did see Pirates and he was awesome in it. That just pissed me off.

Lord of the Rings did prety good though. Took home 11 Oscers. Tied with Titanic and some other movie for bringing home the most Oscers.

I thought the most hilarious part of the night was with Jack Black and Ferril (I know who he is, but yet can't think of his first name) singing! That was absolutely hilarious!

Another funny moment was that when one of the winners went up to accept an award (I was half paying attention. I missed the award title and also the winner, bad, Chris, bad!) he started the thank you's by saying "Thank you Lord of the Rings for not being nominated in this catagory!" ...Besides for the song from the other two listed above, that was hilarious.

Oh, almost forgot. Billy Crystal kept a running joke practically the whole night about everyone who lives in New Zealand being thanked. It was kind of funny because eventually everybody else started going along with it and working it into their own rutines when they caught on to the fact Billy was right.

Oh, and here is something to make note of. Out of all 11 awards that Lord of the Rings took home, I only counted THREE times that in the thank you's they listed J.R.R. Tolkein. I thought that was kind of sad because without his creative stories they wouldn't be up thanking everyone else in the first place. Oh and all three of those people were the same person, which makes it worse. It was Peter Jackson, the director. (NOTE: I missed maybe 20 minutes in the middle to do a load of laundry and also dishes and the first hour because I wasn't home yet. May have been more then 3 times, but I'd say I saw a good 3/4 of it and I kept a running count of what I did see. Sad. Another reason I'm glad Harry Potter wasn't in the runnings for an award tonight because it isn't like they would thank JKR for giving them a story to work with!)

The person who said they were thankful LOTR wasn't nominated in their category were the Canadians who won for best foreign language film for their movie "Barbarians", I think.

I LOVED the Jack Black/Will Ferrel song. "You're Boring" was hilarious, especially at the end with "we'll cut to commercial to Del Taco" and "look at Catherine Zeta-Jones, she's snoring!" But I think Robin Williams speaking spanish behind Billy Crystal was better. I loved Billy Crystal explaining that Williams was the reason for the 5 second delay. But the funniest part of the show probably were the old clips of Bob Hope. I know it was supposed to be sad and a tribute to him, but Bob Hope was hilarious in life and the clips showed him at his best.

But the reason that not everyone thanked JRR Tolkein was because some of the categories related to the movie were not actually related to the book. You have things such as original score and song which were made not by Tolkein, but by original thinkers who made the music to give the movie feel. Those areas were not related to the books themselves. The areas that were completely related to the books, such as adapted screenplay, best picture, and director, were all attributed to JRR Tolkein, as was the art direction.

Yeah, you have to stop somewhere thanking JRR Tolkien. I love the books but Tolkien did not make the movie. Sure, if he never wrote the books all of this would not be happening but then if Peter Jackson's mom and dad did not 'get a wicked gleam in their eyes' we would not have Peter Jackson OR the movies.

So I think thanking JRR Tolkien more than once is redundant. I get what you're saying though, don't get me wrong. I don't get everyone thanking their husbands, wives, children, etc. Ummm, they KNOW what kind of family they are in and even more... THEY should be thanking the bread-winner. Just my opinion!

I am not a Johnny Depp fan yet I think he should have won. I was pleased that Sean Penn won however. Even though I am REALLLLLLY not a fan of his. He just simply did a good job in the film. Miss Theron was a good choice.

And eye candy winner goes to JENNIFER GARNER!

I saw Sean Penn's performance in Mystic River it was good, but nowhere near Depp's amazing job in Pirates! I really wanted him to win!

Penn isn't exctly on good terms with the Academy either! I think Penn won just to placate him becasue he was so jilted on his other 4 nominations. Some of Penn's other nominated performances where more Oscar worthy than Mystic River.

Man, did Johnny Depp look delicious in that tux or what ladoes!?

Yes he did. Johnny Depp looked incredible last night. He did get onto more than one fashion designer's list...not because the tux was so original, but because he looked so damn good in it.
