Ah, the John Williams debate.
I love almost everything John Williams does - most of it gives me goose bumps!
For movies, he uses a theme styling (there's a person's name attached to the official word for this, but I don't have my disks with me) that connects you to the scene. In Star Wars, Luke has his own theme, as do Leia, Han, Yoda, the Empire, the Force, etc. The music playing in the background often matches the main focus of the scene.
He's done this in most of his films. I was so excited when I heard that JW would be doing HP - it was another positive sign that the movies were going to be epic. When the trailers first came out, and I heard that title theme, I felt sure that we were bound for a great movie and an awesome soundtrack.
However, that trailer music, later to be called Hedwig's Theme (not the Prologue piece, that one is too weak), is one of only a couple of pieces that make me feel like I'm inside the movie when I listen to it. And, c'mon... Hedwig's Theme? Why is it called that? Call it Hogwart's Theme or even Harry's Theme. That piece shouldn't have anything to do with Hedwig - unless JKR told JW something about the end of the series that indicates that Hedwig is the real star and hero of the books!
And, unlike Locke, I like the Hedwig's Theme piece - alot! I just can't stand that it was named what it was. I feel that it has great depth and range and when it plays at the opening of the movie, I still get goose bumps. Sure, the parts where it sounds like Schroeder is playing it on his toy (grand) piano are a little child-like, but I think that it helps to add to the story - a young boy having to grow up fast in a strange new world.
Most of the other music was okay, but certainly not up to JW standards. I got the feeling that he is either getting tired of making movie music or that he just didn't take this one too seriously. The only theme in the track list is Hedwig's, of which I already ranted about. Nobody else has a theme. Voldy, Hermione, Ron, Hadrig, D'dore, even Harry, all without themes.
He might be getting tired of doing this stuff. In Star Wars - Phantom Menace, it didn't sound like he was trying very hard there either, although there were more themes. SW - Attack of the Clones was a big improvement, but HP - CoS was still dissappointing, although it did seem to have darker, more adventureous parts to it.
In HP, the main part of Hedwig's Theme, the part that everybody recognizes as "the Harry Potter music", is repeated in many of the other pieces. So why wasn't it applied properly?
Here's what I think he should have done with some of the tracks.
Original My Way
1. Prologue Ending Credits
2. Harry's Wondrous World Hogwart's Theme
8. Mr. Longbottom Flies Harry Flies!
9. Hogwarts Forever/Stairs (should have been played during the feast and should be more mixed up than it is)
10. Ridgback/Change of Seasons (the Change of Seasons piece should be Hedwig's Theme. And how does Norbert get his own theme?)
17. Face of Voldemort Nothing in this piece that can be made into a theme - but Voldy should have one.
19. Hedwig's Theme Harry's Theme and Opening Titles
I love the Quidditch and the Chess Game pieces. The other pieces that I didn't change are "okay", and make good filler but I think that many things could have had themes and been done to JW's traditional excelence.
Dad-Eye,
