This is is gonna sound kind of dumb, because I'm a bit skeptical of this theory myself. Have you considered that Rita Skeeter might not be a woman. She is described in book 4, chapter 18, as having "elaborate and curiously rigid curls taht contrast oddly with her heavy jawed face...her thick fingers clutching her crocodile skin bag ended in two inch nails paited crimson...her fingers had harry's upper arm in a suprisingly strong grip..."Dumbledore, how are you?" she said, standing and holding out her long mannish hands to Dumbledore..." It is also mentioned that she has three gold teeth, if that has anything to do with it. Do you think that Rita isn't a woman, or at least not who she says she is. The curiously rigid curls could be a wig...I mean, JKR didnt even spend this much time on harrys discription.

Filch cracked his whip threatingly.
"You know what? said Fred. "I dont think we are. George, I think we've outgrown
full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lightly.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and said together,
"Accio Brooms!"...
"Give her hell from us, Peeves!"

Yep, we are smack dab in the middle of "Over Analyze" Season. Too much time has passed without anything good, and too much time before the next good thing.
By the way, did anybody notice that Mugglenet has a message that says some publishers have been notified of a Sep 04 printing? Mugglenet states that it's from a good source, but that you shouldn't get your hopes up too terribly high.

I dont think she's a crossdresser but Galadriel Waters speculated about that in her first guide so I'm not sure. That guide has been right about ninety five percent of their predictions although I can't picture J.K. Rowling putting a transvestite in books that kids read.

See, this is when you know that people have completely run out of theories. This is one of the more absurd ones I've heard. Of course woman aren't allowed to have strong grips. They can't have thick skin! We all must fit into one beautiful stereotype! And if one of us doesn't, that one's a man!
Hopefully you see how ridiculous that sounds.

First off, I'm not saying that just because she has a strong grip that she is a man. I am just saying that in real life, who cares, but in JKR's world, nothing is a coincidence and it has been said three times in book 4 about the way she looks. I said I have no clue if this theory is correct, but I am just saying that JKR wouldn't specify her mannish hands, "curiosly" rigid curls, and her strong grip for nothing, I am pretty sure. I mean, think of all the other stuff that she has done that way, like with moody (barty crouch jr.) she did that through the whole book but many people never guessed that he was bad.

In JKR's world, a strong grip would not suggest a man. It's usually a trait of an assertive person, which Rita definitely was. Her skin, demeanor, etc. all indicated a nosy person who asserted themselves where they weren't welcome. Nothing suggested a man.

we know rita's a horrible person-maybe, just maybe-she did something really horrible-I mean REALLY horrible-that would keep her from ever getting another story, so she changed her appearance completely. I could actually sort of see that happening in HP-it would be funny that she's a transvestite, but at the same time it could involve harry, ron, and hermione investigating and discovering a huge scandal. just a thought.

Just a thought-what if the first Rita was killed and someone is dressing up as her. Nah, forget that, that is a little out there.

I don't think this is any more silly than some other theories that have been put out there. I don't agree with it either but I don't think it's entirely the silliest ever heard. I also don't think anyone is suggesting a transvestite. Just a disguise. You can dress up as the opposite sex for a disguise without being a transvestite.
Anyway, I would think that JKR, if she needed someone to be in disguise, it would be more 'magical'.... like Tonks' ablility. Then again, it would fit too neatly that some bad guy or woman just happened to have that ability. You know what I'm saying? Good, because I don't. I just lost my train of thought.

An odd feeling rose in Harry -- an emotion quite differnt from the anger and greif that had filled him since Sirius's death. It was a few moments before he realised that he was feeling sorry for Luna.
"How come people hide your stuff?" he asked her, frowning.
"Oh...well..." She shrugged. "I think they think I'm a bit odd, you know. Some people call me 'Loony' Lovegood actually."
Harry looked at her and the new feeling of pity intensified rather painfully.
"That's no reason for them to take your things," he said flatly. "D'you want help finding them?"
