Is it common practice in England to have both a godfather and a godmother? Here in Canada it seems to be and so I am wondering if Harry has a godmother that has yet to be revealed.

It would be kind of (really) weak to introduce somebody like that now though.

I agree - it would be really crap to bring the character in now. It would annoy me simply because it brings up the question "why the hell didnt Harry ask about who she was when he was told he had a godfather?" - - Harry's lack of questioning things is beginning to become a constant theme in the books and it is starting to get on my nerves...

p.s - The godmother does not need to be a girlfriend of Sirius, they dont have to have any relation to each other. But that brings up a good point, Sirius was said to be quite a looker and popular with the girls... Was he married? or was there a girlfriend? if so, where is she?

Well I don't think she'd be intrested anymore seeing as how he was an ecaped prisoner from Azkaban were he was sent after being convicted for murder and being a servent of Voldemort.

I don't think Sirius, as good-looking as JKR says he was, would have been the type to be tied down with a permanent g/f for long. I know I wouldn't be! j/k

As weak as I feel the revelation of a godmother would be, it seems odd that JKR had none of her characheters ever mention the possibility of a godmother at all. You would think that someone as apparently bright as Hermoine would have thought of it.

Ah, the classic argument. Sorry, but this argument always gets me sentimental (sniff). It was the first fight I ever had on the HP Rumor/Discussion board, when it was still in its original beseen.com form about 5 years ago.
Back then, someone brought it up. I had been raised in a strict Catholic family, but I still only had a godmother. I had no godfather and never had one. But you don't need to be Catholic to have a godparent, so I also made that argument.
There was a girl named Gwyn who proclaimed herself an authority on all Catholic doctrine. She insisted that Church law demanded that you MUST have both a godfather and a godmother, and that non-Catholics are FORBIDDEN from having them, thus Harry was definitely Catholic and must have both.
She then told me that I knew nothing about the Church, I was condemned to hell, and of course she was right.

And the worst part? All she ever talked about was how Harry was Catholic, so every person on the board insisted that she was right, even though absolutely NONE of them knew what Catholicism even was. That's the most frustrating part- when people argue concepts they know nothing about just because they want to be associated with someone else.

I kicked Gwyn off eventually when I got enough control there to do so, since everyone of her arguments was based around how another board member was going to hell, and her giving fire and brimstone speeches on religion.

She also came to this board once not too long ago and told everyone here that if they did not serve in the military, they weren't true Americans and had no right to even be here (like everyone here is American). Pissed Sandy off. It was funny.

But back to the question- I don't think Harry has a godmother.

Erm... personally, I highly doubt Harry would be Catholic.  I would think more along the lines of C. of E., myself.  Helen is right.  You don't need to be Catholic to have a godparent.  Even if you are Catholic, you don't need two.  One is sufficient.  I've taught enough baptismal classes for parents to have that one down pat.  In fact, my son has only a godmother.  We didn't feel the need to add another.

I also agree that it would be lame to introduce a godmother at this juncture.  Too convenient and where the devil was she for the previous five books?

Lilmiss, there has been SO much speculation in fanfiction about Sirius and whether he was married or had a girlfriend.  There must be several thousand fics on the subject.  Still, I don't think it actually matters to the books.  It might be an interesting bit of trivia and an insight to the character and all, but I don't see how it could forward the story now.  She would have had to appear or be mentioned long before this.  Of course, if Sirius was still alive, anything that happens in his life could be significant.  But, seeing as how he isn't, that is that.

I doubt Harry's Catholic but I do think he's Christian. I doubt JKR will bring up what religion Harry is. Something I've wondered for a while is if there's a church service at Hogwarts. I don't think Sirius would have been married but I wonder if any other Order members are?

Helen- I loved that. You spent like three paragraphs talking about a catholic fanatic and then you answered the question in one sentence. LOL Since I am not catholic and no barely anything of the religion, I will not discuss that, but I will say that even if Harry was catholic, WHY WOULD THAT EVEN MATTER??
And Im sorry that you are going to hell because you dont have a godfather-Im so ashamed!!!

Yeah, I don't see how it matters. I don't think Harry is Christian...why? Because I don't think Harry is anything. I cannot see JKR bringing religion into this book. It's such a highly controversial subject, and ultimately doesn't belong in a fantasy book. You can bring in religious symbolism, but in this time of story, the religion of the characters doesn't matter and has no place in the plotline. Since I would hate JKR to start discussing religion at every turn with the characters, I don't think Harry will ever be discussed in terms of his faith, hence he is not Christian since his religion will never even exist in the fictional story.

Maybe the godmother, if there even was one, is dead too. I mean we haven't heard of every single name of the people James and Lily knew. And Voldemort did kill a lot of people.

Or maybe it is someone we already know, but she has never come out and told Harry, or anyone. I think the first thing I said is more likely then this, but we'll really never know until it's answered. If it's answered.

As for which order members are married...

I doubt Lupin has a wife because he'd accidentally eat her or something when he transformed

Something tells me Dumbledore had a wife but now she's dead

As for the others, feel free to speculate.

I doubt that Harry has a Godmother because it would be odd to introduce her so late and also a bit corny IMO.

Harry: I hate you. You killed my godmother.

Umbridge: No Harry, I am you godmother...hahahahahahah!!!!

My first guess would be Molly Weasley as his Godmother. The only other main characters in the book are McGonagall and Petunia, that could be his Godmother.

Perhaps Petunia IS Harry's godmother which may be another reason Harry was forced to live with The Dursleys. Although, at the time Sirius was still around....

I have to think about this.

I was just about to say that, I think Petunia would be Harry's godmother because she is the one who has been asked to protect him. I think Dumbledore sort of crisened(sp?) her godmother because why on earth didn't he go right to Sirius with Harry, I mean he hadn't killed anyone yet and it doesn't seem like Dumbledore to jump to conclutions about the whole Sirius was still the secret keeper stuff. So it would be through blood I guess that she is his godmother.

I don't have godparents. I think it was to depressing for my parents to think about or they just didn't trust anyone even family enough to make such a commitment. And this has been justified because all my dad's family are like potheads and my mom's family are cinical *******s. So you know.... I guess that's what orphanages are for, the people who don't have godparents.

I have wondered quite a few times if wizards had religion. I have this one religious fanatic friend who says the human mind was built to believe in God and that it is scientifically proven. But I think that is bullsh*t! I do think however that it makes peoples' lives easier to be able to blame stuff on "God's plan". Anyway, I was thinking that maybe wizards are secure enough to not have the need to believe in a "supreme being" or "a higher power". (I guess you can tell when it comes to religion I would be considered a lost soul or someone who was going to hell, but you know.)

I have Godparents. They used to my parents' best friends when I was born. But I haven't seen my Godmother in 10 years, and my Godfather has gone crazy and thinks he is an Indian.( No offense to any Indians out there.)

Godmothers...Does Harry have one?

No score for this post

My mom is my friend's godmother, but some other person we don't know is his godfather. I think that Harry has a godmother that was introduced earlier in the series, but we looked over her. She will be mentioned again, but as Harry's godmother. She does not have any relation to Sirus though. Maybe Harry's godmother is Mrs. Figg, or one of the witches in the order (Tonks?) If you have any more info, feel free to post back!

It couldn't be Tonks because she would have been like ten when Lily and James picked a godmother (if they even had one).

Personally, I think it's Alice Longbottom. It would explain why we'ver never heard from a godmother, because she's insanse. Also, Lily and Alice were both in the order, were pregenent at the same time, both had children involved in the prohecy, and probably went to Hogwarts around the same time period. So it's likely they were friends.

(By the way, I didn't think of that on my own, I got it from another board)

I think Harrys godmother is mrs. Figg.

Think about it. She has been protecting Harry all of his life.
