Harry Potter and the ageing child stars
By Garry Maddox, Film Reporter
June 8, 2004

If any three people are likely to turn into precocious child stars, they are the young actors at the centre of the Harry Potter movies.

Teenagers Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are recognised around the world as Harry, Hermione and Ron, and have guaranteed careers for at least two more instalments.

But one of their co-stars, David Thewlis, insists they have not become movie brats just yet.

"That's your first thought when you meet them - that they must be precocious and it's all gone to their head," he said in Sydney yesterday. "But they're really not. They're actually very, very nice and funny and good company."

But Thewlis, who joined the cast as Professor Lupin for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, thinks it will be difficult for them to have acting careers outside the series.

"The most likely is Rupert," he said. "I think he's the most natural actor. He's the oldest of the three. I can imagine him moving on. Emma's the same."

It will be tougher for Radcliffe, who plays Harry, to avoid becoming the Mark Hamill of his generation, typecast as Luke Skywalker to the point of hardly getting another decent role.

"Someone is going to have to make a brave casting choice to give him something that takes him away from Harry Potter," Thewlis said. "Or he's going to have to shave his head and grow a beard ... to get away from it."

The English actor, best known previously for Naked and Seven Years in Tibet, was confused when asked to meet the Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron. Thewlis said he was unavailable because he had a Harry Potter meeting at the same time.

"It had not been very well publicised in the British press that the man who did Y Tu Mama Tambien, which was about teenage sex and drugs, was going to do Harry Potter. I thought that was a very strange idea. Now I think it's a genius idea because he's made it so much more interesting."

With the appeal over the controversial M 15+ rating due to be heard today, Thewlis said the filmmakers had pulled back from some of the more extreme horror effects after seeing the results on screen.

I would be suprised if Emma got something because she is so over the top sometimes.

And I don't think that you have to know Radcliffe to know he won't have another job...

Could be wrong though.

Fatcliffe had his pic on the front page of the paper today, donning that stupid looking guitar, pretending to be a rock star..... I would tell him to 'not give up his day job'... but unfortunately Im hoping he does that too!

how funny is Thewlis though - he's not exactly the most established of actors really and here he is bagging out one of the biggest child stars (for reasons unknown to me!) at the moment!

Funny Stuff!

Rupert Grint definitely has the potential to do some more movies outside of the Harry Potter series.

And I wouldn't worry too much about Radcliffe. Even if he never does another movie in his life, he will have made more than enough off of the series (assuming he does 7) to live on for the next 200 years.

If I'm not mistaken, Daniel got his chance because his father was the producer of the first movie.  He is no actor though.  I suspect that the reason Hermione was focused on so heavily in POA was lack of acting skills by Radciffe.  Too bad, really, because he would need to really step up to the plate in GOF.  I can't see how they can have Hermione save the day in that one.

Actually I heard JK asked for Radcliffe directly becuase she had seen him in another movie. And I have this magazine that says Maggie Smith (McGonagall) knew Daniel Radcliffe before because they worked together on David Copperfield. But then in that same magazine there is a quote from Richard Harris that reads "Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic. For never acting before, he could give me lessons."
I sort of contradicts itself but I think I'll go with wait Maggie said because Richard was a bit old.

I thought this was the first movie Emma Watson was ever in. She's supposed to be the one without prior experience.

Columbus and Radcliffe's daddy were friends and he saw him in that other movie and decided he had to be Harry. Sounds like pushing favours personally - then again look at Susan Bones.

Woah. I always thought Dan Radcliffe's dad was a producer, too.... just looked it up on IMDB.com and Mark Radcliffe was born and raised in Oklahoma. Yeah, different Radcliffe..

Strange.

All they have to do for the GOF would be to change the title to Hermione Granger and the Goblet of Fire and then have her win the goblet thing and then have the movie filled with sex scenes with her and Krum. Sounds reasonable, down right puritan for the movie business.

"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lightly.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.

I was under the impression that it was David Heyman who brought Radcliffe into the HP cast. Spotted him at the theatre sitting with his parents, who by the way are friends of Heyman.

WHOA! Ginny! That was scary. Although it does sound like a typical Hollywood thing to do......

See, I believe Daniel and Emma does have futures cuz they're "cute." Emma's gonna be a friggin British Britney and as long as Daniel looks handsome (As many mgazines and crap say) he stays, too. But Rupert, although a very good actor, isn't Hollywood hotcrap. You ask any teen girl and they will say the HP hotties are either Malfoy or Harry. Poor Ron isn't on anyone's list. Every guy literlly wants Emma though.

Hollywood is just a giant beauty contest with many winners. You're pretty, you're in the business. You're not what everyone wants, then you don't stand a chance. Emma is one of the tops for most boys and Daniel is at the top of most girls. If you know hollywood, Rupert wo't be in it for long.

ron's on my list!!! i can't decide if i want to marry him or adopt him... jk. you know, it does take more than good looks to go places in hollywood. it takes talent and expirience too. the only thing people know dan as is harry potter, so he'll probably have to work a bit to lose that association. he'll still get hired though. the rock star idea is a bad move though. i guess if he really loves music and would rather rock than act, it's his choice and stuff, but if he's just doing it for the look, he shouldn't. maybe he's doing it to lose the harry potter look... i don't think it's working though, because he just looks weird with a guitar.

As for watson, she's young enough and pretty enough, so it's probably not too late for her. she'll probably develop some kind of talent over the next few movies. for some reason i could see her in a hugh grant movie, but i think she might also do more american stuff. rupert is really talented, i think. but he'll probably stick to british work. he could probably do well in theater acting too, or those lovely british comedies. i bet he watches monty python.

they all have a chance at going somewhere, but it seems right now that dan has the least chance.

I have a couple (few but still some) friends who think Rupert is hot. And I think there are quite a few people here who thinks he's hot. I think there are plenty of people who think he is hot just not as many as Dan and Tom. And plus there's the red hair I find most girls seem to find that a turn off. Guys and red hair can be weird sometimes.

Well, i've finally seen the movie! And it wasn't that bad actually. I knew what to expect, the only thing that really ticked me off was the firebolt coming at the end. But as long as that's something that doesn't affect the plot i can get over it. Overall i think the acting was a million percent better, and they've all grown so much! I especially think radcliffe improved, and i know most of you don't agree but he has gotten better.

As for Rupert not being hollywood 'good looking', he's getting better! He's growing up, and i think alot of the time it's his charisma that will win him movies (and girls!) I think Emma does a good job with her character, and i think she's beautiful. All of this IMO.
