Peeves is a poltergeist, I suppose just a different kind of ghost, one whose main concern is to trouble the living. Supposedly poltergeists are the only kind of ghost who can effect the physical world. If you believe in ghosts and whatnot.

Yes, a poltergiest is the only ghost who can effect the physical world, LMM. Peeves can actually pick up solid objects and stuff while the other ghosts can't.
Ok, I know a whole lot about poltergiests. Susposedly, they are around houses with teenage kids in them. They just create chaos, by throwing rocks and other objects, picking stuff off tables and throwing it around, moving things from there original places, things like that. The most common thinking is that they "appear" in houses with teenagers is because the teenagers are the ones doing it all.

"You too are about to learn what happens to wrongdoing at my school."
Filch cracked his whip threatingly.
"You know what? said Fred. "I dont think we are. George, I think we've outgrown
full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lightly.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and said together,
"Accio Brooms!"...
"Give her hell from us, Peeves!"
"I didn't know you could read."

I assume you're talking about the HP Books here only! Because in reality you'd be laughed at for making a stupid assumption like that!
I happen to know a hell of alot about the paranormal and have had a fair bit of experience in this field. So please dont base your knowledge on a fictional character!

Stupidity really annoys me and ignorance comes a close second - these guys have exhibited both to a huge extent, so its only fitting I put them in their place......
Fancy basing real life on fictional facts... sigh

Ginny...Poltergiests do not center around houses. A ghost/haunting in the "typical" way are attached to a place. While poltergiest activity is thought to be connected to a specific individual. Yes, a poltergiest is commonly associated with adolescents and it is believed that the teenager is actually involved somehow with the paranormal activity.

I strongly believe that a "typical" ghost has the ability to physically move objects, not just a poltergiest. Why would I believe this you might ask yourself? First, let me remind you people that Peeves isn't the only entity in Hogwarts that has caused physical movements. Myrtle. She is able to affect the movement of the water in her bathroom. Second, (to those of you original board members still around, don't I am a nut case, because I have never mentioned this before. It is not something I run around telling people.) I believe I have a ghost in my home. This being (who I believe to be male) has affected many physical objects within my house. If you are a person who does not believe in this sort of thing that is fine and people are entitled to their opinions. However, there have been situations that I just can not explain. And my husband who would normally scoff at that sort of thing also agrees that something strange is happening in our house. Does having a ghost in my home make me some kind of expert on the paranormal? No. I never said I was. But, I was correcting Ginny's misguided information on poltergiests, that's all.

Sev - I totally dont think you're a nut case! There are many things in this world that people choose NOT to believe. Its not because they dont exist, but because they fear what they cannot explain!
If you feel you have a ghost in the house, then you probably do. and its rather common, especially when you have young children around.
I am no expert on all things paranormal, nor did I claim to be - my most major point in posting was that the opinions were being based on fictional ideas - ie Peeves, where in real life things are not the same!

He is actually quite irritating at times, and other times...well...he's just there.
I have never "seen" him, but his presence is felt quite often in addition to his mischevious little pranks. I think the dog can see him though. At least I think she can.

Well, seeing as Violet is only 2 months old, nothing out of the ordinary with her. My oldest is almost 4 and when we moved into this place she was about 9 months old. I have never seen her playing/talking with an unseen person. She has never mentioned anything either (knock wood.) However, when we first moved in my first experience with the ghost was in Olivia's room. Although I didn't think much of it at the time, I was vaccuming before we moved in the furniture and when I would push the vaccum forward it felt as if someone was on the other side pulling at the same. I have never had this sensation while vaccuming in any other room except Olivia's. Then later that night I was finishing up unpacking our bedroom when I realized that all my perfume (3 bottles) was missing. We went through all the discarded boxes etc. and never found it. Then about 6 months later I was rearanging the furniture in our room and found all 3 bottles sitting neatly in a row under the center of our bed. That was the first time I realized something odd was going on, and it was then that I remembered the vaccum cleaner incident when we first moved in.
I could go on and on with stories! Never anything scary, just mischevious.

I can't remember the details, I'd have to search back MANY pages in this board to find it, but I was followed in a graveyeard by a ghost once. I made a thread about it here. Everyone thought I was nuts lol. I can't remember the details, but it happened lmao! If anyone cares to go find the thread it would be months ago when it happened. Maybe even a year ago tops.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure it's like a ghost that is supposed to exist in an teenagers house (that was said) but I think it is supposed to be an angry teenager and they cause problems for those of whom the teenagers are mad at (a.k.a. their parents, siblings, ect. This makes sence b/c I am sure there are A LOT of angry teenagers at Hogwarts. Does that make any sence at all?

There are always exceptions - the paranormal world is far from being 'black and white', there are many grey areas, thus many exceptions to what ghosts get up to.
As for Peeves and JKR, its fictional, so she can make up whatever she likes and in context of the book, it will be correct.
