maybe i'm a bit slow, but it just hit me: snape can read minds (the opposite of occulmency. i forgot the word).
that explains a lot.
many times, in all the books, starting in book 1, harry's got a feeling snape knows things he had done or thinks.
for example - when they make the polyjuice potion. Harry creates a distraction during potion class, by throwig that firework into Goyle's cauldron. snape is angry, LOOKS AT HARRY and says he'll punsih the one who did it.
why look at harry?
that's one example. but there are many others.

btw, from reading the books again, snape is... hmm a cool dude. it looks like he hates harry, but when harry needs help, snape is allways there for him, even if harry doesn't know it. e.g.:
1. book1 - 1st quidich game. snape mumbles the anti-curse against Quirrel's curse. heck - he could have left it alone if he really hates harry...
2. occulmency lessons
etc.

Yeah many of us here have already realized that. Actually I thought Snape might have been able to read minds judging on how many times Harry says he can in books 1-4. I didnt realize the extent to which it would be important in the books though.

Yea, a lot of people say that Snape is mean, but Harry seems to get away with a lot of far-fetched lies that he tells Snape. If Snape was actually as mean as everyone says he is, than Harry would have gotten in a lot of more trouble than he has throughout Hogwarts.

Yeah, you are a bit slow.

The defense against Occlumency is Legilimency. Snape is considered a "superb" occlumens so I think it goes without saying that he is also highly skilled at Legilimency.

You are definetly slow if you are just now realizing that Snape is a "cool dude."

Have you by any chance JUST begun reading Harry Potter? If you have been reading it for a while and are now just catching up on all these things I would get an IQ test if I were you.

Maybe what's read in somebody's mind cannot be used as evidence. The person doing the reading can lie about what they're reading, it may not be accurate (false memories, etc.), maybe it is even too much of an invasion of privacy to be allowed. Plus, the person on trial must be able to give THEIR OWN verson of the story, truth, lies, and all, not what somebody else reads from their mind for them. Just a thought. Maybe that's why they don't use that truth potion thing on trials either. (I wondered why they just didn't give some of that to Harry and everyone at his trial. It would have told them all that he definatly wasn't lieing!). Okay, I hope that this all made sense! lol.

Ya, I already know he can read minds; it already says that in book 5. I don't know about the cool dude thing.

1.Snape felt he was in debt to Harry's father for saving his life so thats why he worked so hard to save Harry first year.

2.Didn't DD just tell him to give Harry Occulemency seeing as how he and Snape were the only ones who could (I think)?

"You too are about to learn what happens to wrongdoing at my school."
Filch cracked his whip threatingly.
"You know what? said Fred. "I dont think we are. George, I think we've outgrown
full-time education."
"Yeah, I've been feeling that way myself," said George lightly.
"Time to test our talents in the real world, d'you reckon?" asked Fred.
"Definitely," said George.
And before Umbridge could say a word, they raised their wands and said together,
"Accio Brooms!"...

"Give her hell from us, Peeves!"

"I didn't know you could read."
Draco from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

"The spiders...The spiders are making me tap dance..." "You tell those spiders, Ron" "Ya, ya, okay, I will." :-D tee hee

"When did she get here? Did you see her come in?" HILARIOUS!!...poor Ron. ;-D
