I think it was understood that Voldemorte was heading for the potters. Remember DD said something about being tipped off and warning the potters.

Or another way to look at it... How do we know they were not hidden? I know the Longbottom's were tourtured to insanity, but wasn't it after the Potter's died? Maybe whoever their secret keeper was at the time thought with Voldemort gone, the threat wasn't there anymore also, so the spell was ended. Of course obviously I don't know anything more then you do, but until we do know that is a possibility.
