MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Dec. 10, 2001) - Ryan Newman's fleet of Alltel Team Penske Ford Taurus race cars will carry the number 12 for the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup season.
Penske Racing South officials confirmed the move today, citing the equity position and history the team has with the number. The Penske association with the car number 12 dates back to the early 1970's when racing legend Bobby Allison drove Penske-owned race cars bearing that number.
Newman and his Matt Borland-led team will compete in all NASCAR Winston Cup events during the 2002 season as teammates to veteran driver Rusty Wallace and his Bill Wilburn-led Miller Lite Team Penske.
