I was at kagnew winter69 thru aug70. Did you know
sp/5 Fisher of woodland, wash ? or try these: SGT
Deal,Nicholas(spot)Cannard(still lives in beaverton,OR}.
I was put on general detail; when I didn't pass the
OJT. I left as the CoB mail clerk and DEROSed to
the 175thRRC where I return to the use of my MOS
(32D),get a 6 mo early and to my surprise,a citation
for an ARCOM in the mail(never asked for the medal).
Did you know S.T.(Barney)Curtiss(32F) or Kunzer(72B)?
(time for Irony) A friend suspected Barney gave the
bad info that almost busted me. Kunzer got in trouble
when a buddy died from a Jeep accident(in Asmara).
The point is, I probably deserved the bad eval-
uation. I did 2 major F---ups at Kagnew. In doing
an HJ I forgot to turn the dial to send and while
I pondered about no reception from the other end,
two or more stations went down. F---up2, I read a
clear text msg on the red side about a skirmish with
the ELF- probably the same one I was in the week before
on an Anthropology field trip. I surmise that a loud-
mouth named MacReady got blamed for my actions...
There is point to this story. A transfer gave me
a second chance, This naive college flunky had one
redeeming virtue- CYA. I had to cover for 3 major
F---ups- The worse were locking out a send TTY for
more than an hour and delaying(through lack of elec
tronic skills) the installation of a new line to Pleiku
ca.Sept71. My CO(a W2, I think) gave me the job of
writing the reason for outage report. I was good at
BS(snowjobs). So I leave Vietnam with some guilt
that someone may have been disgraced(or at worse,died}
from my actions. I have hoped that my errors may have
caused a soldier to avoid confrontation for another
day. I am thankful that I avoided TET68 and69 and
the coup in ERITREA. For the BRASS and NCO's who
want martial law,and feel they have a need to know,
GET BENT!!!! The good ones protect. C.M. White.
