Before I start cooking, I fill one side of the sink with scalding hot, soapy water. No cold water added....I start with scalding hot. As I cook, I throw any utensils I'm done with in the sink to sit. I wash them as I find time, usually while waiting for something to boil or while I'm timing something else.
As everyone finishes eating, they just put their dishes in the hot soapy water. Once the meal is done, the water is still hot but cool enough I can put my hands in without hurting myself. I wash the dishes and put them in the drainer (or, my daughter or son will wash them...they like this system because they don't have to scrub). Later on, I'll put them up.
But that sinkful of hot water really helps me out, because Ill do dishes while I'm cooking plus I'm more likely to wash them after we eat.
Also, my PikStik has helped more than I thought possible. Singing the Humphrey Bear song while I'm working with the PikStik helps....
First you stick a rag, put it in the bag,
(bomp bomp)
Then you bend your back, put it in the sack
(bomp bomp)
That's the way it's done, it's a lot of fun
(bomp bomp)
Cutting capers, putting papers in the bag....
