the school meeting

hi everyone,
this morning had a meeting at the school, parent teacher interview. the advocate lady came with us. she asked some questions about the kids, about how they get along with others, and about how they deal with transition in school. apparently mikas teacher says transition is NOT a problem, except for his "attitude problem" ( ). apparently paying attention and staying on task is a problem, but that too is his "attitude"...... and as for his spelling problems (his spelling is tested at a grade 2 level, he is in grade 6), well the language arts teacher said "spelling skills are not empasized anymore" and therefore it is not a problem anymore either. She said, "we used to do spelling quizzes, but the students that did well, always did well, and the ones that didnt do well, always did poorly, so we stopped doing them"... ooh, is that how you run a school, if the results are always the same, just stop doing it, the results wont be an issue anymore.
as for michelle, the teacher said (by the way with michelle in the room) that her spelling was "horrendous"... ohh, and also her desk was "horrendous"... she apparently does ok with academics, and excells in reading, but spelling is a problem for her too.....
so, guess the kids are just are horrendous with bad attitudes...
dont know what to say. the advocate didnt seem to 'notice' (or what?) those comments, and didnt ask any further clarification as to what exactly was the attitude problem....
and she said, "well, it sounds like the kids are doing really well"... the "teachers dont seem to have any concerns about them"... well guess not, if they accept a grade 6 student spelling at a grade 2 level, and reading at a grade 3 level... and still are passing him with C's and D's in those subjects.....
guess nothing is a problem until they are finished high school and cant spell or write... then ofcourse they can go to adult education classes to learn how to do those things... on their own, rather then taking up the time of the teachers now to teach them
the special education teacher did say, that they have a huge problem with help at school. she said they do not have anyone for their "speech and language kids" tocome in and help them. apparently there was only two teachers to do that, (for the whole board? i dono?) but one is one extended sick leave, and the other one is on maternity leave.... so this year there is no "speech and language" for anyone at school.
ohh, did ask about the computers.. the teachers pointed to three in the library and said the kids get to 'take turns coming in if they want to miss their recess' to work on them... apparently each class gets a time frame of two weeks during the school year where this class kids can get on teh computers... mikas class, with 30 students, over two weeks, should be just enough that each student gets to get on one of those 3 comp0uters once in the school year....
that constitutes their whole computer skills component of the education...
the teacher mentioned music... he said they were 'trying to at least' play recorders in class sometimes... he then noted in mikas previous report card about music, adn said they were doing "theory" askied mika what they were doing, he said "we played liek teh flute and trombone and stuff"... teacher loosk up "oooh wow, you hand instruments"...

home schooling starts to sound good...
dono....
will go to town now to get something special...
a few christmas decorations!

lilghostie done venting about small SMALL rural schools.... out in the middle of "nowhere"
