YOU can't separate functioning of a person from his/her own skills in any area. Dexerity or coordination, knowledge to use certain skills are all
important to do certain physical tasks. It is like saying nutrition is different from the food that you consume. How can that be?
For you use the knowledge that you have to select the food items to gain nutritional benefits that your body may require. That is insane to separate skills from functioning aspects. Unless a person doing or functioning in certain way set by the norm, you never know if that particular person has those skills required to do that functioning.

At SD from educational point of view, they check and see, if a child has certain skills to master certain tasks. There is no need for them to have a Dx as they are not doctors. They are just educators. They see the symptoms in the form of behaviors and see how it can affect a child's learning. MR is just a score that they need to put goals and objectives very realistically. Autism Dx is for medical purpose only.

If they trace and find any viral load in a child and treat them successfully and help the child in terms of physical health, then it is of some use. Other wise, it is very little benefit to put the child thru many medical tests and therapies, esp when they are gene based problems.
