i've always assumed that if your project is large enough, you'll need binary anyway

experience has shown me that you can pretty much line input anything if you open for input and each line is less than too many k, but maybe i haven't tried enough.

if i was using a 2mb file, i would use binary and keep track of where i was reading from, but i would not trust random, even if i could.
