However, my new laptop runs QB programs very nicely in all modes. (The CMOS battery on my old laptop died and needs to be replaced, but I've been using the new laptop instead.)

It's my desktop that's been acting up, ever since my son replaced the dead motherboard with a new one. I will have to ask him to play around with that fix when he gets a chance, since he's the technician around here.
