Thanks. This worked without Screen 9

I think Screen 12 serves the same as 9 would. This worked W/O freezing QB.

SCREEN 12
CLS
filename$ = "tst2.txt"
SHELL "cmd /c start notepad " + filename$

SCREEN 0
SCREEN 12
PRINT "END"
SYSTEM

I found out about Notepad holding things up when I tried it the other ways. Good to know! Your favorite screen was the answer!
