What calling sequence is used in contest

by

I was wondering how people call in a contest. I know the hail call is used a lot but how long do they call for and what are they judged on. My buddies have tried to get me enter contest but I told them I don't have a clue what goes on in them. Good Luck to everyone in the world.

find one that fits you

by aws

The best way is to try the calls out at your hunting store. I would recommend a primos wench for a good starter. I would also recommend comp. calling. You learn alot and meet alot of intresting people but then you would have to get a comp. call.

good luck

duck call

by

As a beginner, you must get a haydel's bdr95. Anyone who hunts a lot of ducks would not disagree that you could spend a lot of money to get that great call, but you need to learn how to blow a call to get the ducks. This is the call that will allow you to do that! Good luck!

If you are a beginner duck caller, you can't go wrong with the Haydel's new Redleg Call. It is very easy to blow and sounds great. Good Hunting!

feeding call

by jwillbowhunter

I disagree, I used to believe this and used pretty much hail calls or no calling at all after I got there attn. But I found that a hail call to a duck that is coming into final pass will flair the bird and I have found that even more often when you stop calling the birds resond badly. I use a cluck and a feeder call to just keep things going and finish bringing that duck in last last 40 yards! They are great fillers and help keep my nerves down!

feed call

by suprblckeagle

i think the feed call is almost as important as the hail call, especially during late season. i like to use some real soft quacks and then a series of decending quacks that kind of stutter. i've found this to be very effective at bringing them in when they just aren't sure if they should land or not.

Feed Call

Hey when practicing a feed call try to say sharply ticka tick...ticka ticka ticka tick(Make the last four notes rapid) Think about slammin your tongue against the roof of your mouth. This is a tough one to get. WOrk on making the sound without your call first ticka tick...ticka ticka ticka tick! Good Luck!

I've heard a ton of guys carry on with, "ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka". GEEEEEEEEZ!!!! You will NEVER hear a real Greenhead do that. Keep it simple, keep it real.

Filler

by

I use clucks and feeding chatter as filler when the ducks are in close and coming straight at me. I think what it mostly does is help with my nerves until the ducks make a move that I need to respond to. My favorite response being with the shotgun I have never mastered the true rolling feed call that you hear in comp calling. It is a beautiful sound. For me, clucks and "took-tooks" seem to have a confidence building factor for ducks that want to come. In close use these as filler and use the lonesome hen call if the bird starts to drift on way or another, then a soft greeting call once they pass directly over the blind. One thing I think is true is that you better be in a feeding area and not a resting area if you are going to try using feed calls.

takes time

by caduckman

when i first started calling this was the hardest call to master,i thought i would never get it ,but with some practice and a good call it works great.it is a great filler call and ducks seem relaxed with it.iv'e used this call when iv'e got ducks close but not there yet, also use your'e hand thats around the barrel to mix up and sometimes muffle the call.once you get the timing down of the ticka ticka or tutt tutt or tuga tuga a mixture i like to use,you can then throw with alot of practice a little drag tuga tuga tuga tugaa.the call should be made in five to seven notes then little puases to brak it up.welcome to duck hunting and dont be afraid to call its the only way you'll get good.

Use a double lanyard

by Erik

I had a p-2 Wench. Good double reed. Worked well, but I had a problem with the grafite insert falling out of the barrel. One time another hunter spotted it on the ground. The second time... well, I don't blow a Primos anymore. If you've got one use a double lanyard.

i lost the business end of a primos wench once and called the company. primos said to send what you had left of the call and 5 bucks and they will replace it. you might give it a try, i think the number is on the call. sure worth the $5.35. i like the wench and i also blow an echo single reed. very easy to blow with good volume.

Rookie duck caller wants to know about Duck Commander?

I am a hunter that is new to duck calling. My question is: I have seen videos and heard calls from Phil Robertson ( duck commander ).He seems like the things he teaches are totally straight forward, to the point, no nonsense. His calls are very reasonably priced. Is this guy for real? Are his calls worth buying? Please help me out on this one guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

duck commander?

by

i've blown many calls on the market today and most of them you can make sound very good. (just like who ever you have heard blow them), but the dc calls are a different story. know matter how much i try i can not seem to figure out how to make phils calls sound the way he makes them sound. since you haven't blown many call you might do good with his at first and if you get one be sure to get his duck calling video. it is great for teaching you how to use any call.

Duck Commander Duck Calls

by

Jon, I use a 20 yr old DC200 Duck Call. It's my
favorite. I also have about all Phils calls, but
if you want a D.C. call get a DC200. It's a wood-
en duck call. His plastic calls are okay, but in
my opinion I just like a wood call. Also get his
Drake Mallard call, this call is absolutly awe-
some! My friend & I each use a different call, hen
with the Drake call- it will work! One about Phils' calls is you don't have to grunt or make
any noise while blowing into his calls, so its a
little easier for beginners.Have fun & good
hunting.

blow hard

by naked duck

I have found dc calls very ducky sounding and have hunted with Phil, but the only thing i have found wrong with his calls is it is hard to get a extension cord long enough to reach to blind to run the air compresser to blow the thing. Hadel builds a drs88 that I have found ducky yet easy to blow.

My 2 Cents

by Deekslayer

Jon, I started calling 16 years ago with a duck commander DC200. I continue to think this call is a great call for the $. I no longer use this call, but continue to use the drake call. I think so much of Phil that I purchased an acrylic from him at the AR hunting show out of respect for him and his calls and had him autograph it. If you are serious about calling, follow Phil's recommendations and buy a polycarbonate Echo. You will be very satisfied. I would like to add, that I did purchase an Echo acrylic timber call, that I do not like. But the polycarbonate calls are great sounding and my calling improved when I switched. Oh by the way, I must have run through about 30 calls before settling on Echo and RNT. I would also like to recommend that you buy a live recording of mallard ducks to try and emulate. Then buy the call. Good Hunting.

DC Calls/Deekslayer

by

You got me there, Deekslayer. I too have purchased
a RNT cocobola Reg.,and a Bocote Timber calls. I
wanted to get to a "higher level" in duck calling.
Phil is a hecka-va nice guy. I still use my DC
calls when I lose confindence in my ability to
use the RNTs,but I do try to pratice everyday. Is
there a different method in using a "timber" call?
I have the RNT cassette & Buck Gardners video, but
it seems they're using the Reg.ARK.type call.
Thanks for any info.

Blowing a Single Reed Call

by Mike

Just purchased a Echo Acrylic Timber Call. Having some problems getting the sound I want. I've been blowing the Haydel Redleg, and do well with it. Thought I'd try the Echo for close in work. Does anybody have any tips or know of any good video's on blowing a single reed call? Help!

Me too...

by

Over the past few seasons I have graduated to a single reed. Definitely more you can do with them. But I go the other way - use the single reed for the Highball and loud work and the double reed for the softer close in work. Not sure if this is right but it works for me. The thing with double reeds is they are forgiving. The single reed requires much better air gaiting technique and tongue position - OK I've tipped my hand. I am a devotee of the Carlson system - they have a web site and a video - Pro Duck Calling that explains it all. Another very profound influence on my calling was Duck Commander Phil Robertson's the Art of Commanding ducks video. Very good basic duck calling including air pressure control. Don't know if this was your issue, but it was mine as I went from double to single reed calls. I blow the single probably 90% of the time now, But I never go hunting without a Haydell on the lanyard.

Erik,I'm glad I wasn't the only one w/this "pro-

to "college(sp)" on higher learning of Duck Call-
ing. What is it with "timber" style calls? I've
sent an e-mail to RNT(the calls I've been playing
with) to see if they can give me any pointers. I
can use the RNT Cocobola okay, but that "Old
Style(read timber)" call escapes me.The Buck Gard-
ner vidieo is REAL good, but nobody covers timber
style calling technices(sp). Good Luck.

There's one on my lanyard

by

If you read throuh the posts you'll see I am a bid Haydell fan simply because for the novice caller (only 30 yrs. experience here and still pretty much a novice), they work. I usually tell folks to get the DR -85 which is the same basic call as the red leg, same reeds etc. The one thing I did not like about the red leg is the smell of the plastic. For a moderately expensive call it smells like a kids toy with the plastic they use. But it works. I own a lot of calls. But the ones that go hunting are a Carlson Volochoke and a Haydell. Some days I'm a little off with the single reed Carlson and use the Haydell to get me back to confidence. And I've got the green heads this year to prove its effectiveness

Weather it's one of the big names like RNT, Echo, Southern or the up and coming Betts, I don't like paying $125 bucks. None are worth that. If your looking for an alternative try Fowl Language calls $75 and well worth it! They compare to these above note by note. Coustom acrylic for hunting or comp.
