I wish to inform you that Major(retired) William (Bill) C. Mason passed
away May 9 2006. He served as Chief of Ops for the 819th when it was
based on RAF Wethersfield August 1985 to July 1 1988. I believe it was
for him the finest way to finish his career.
Received this notice from his wife Colleen.
I'm glad someone brought up this subject. I was sent to Pleiku from Phu Cat in '67. I was a Heavy Equipment Operator which ran the cement plant for awhile and the green Euclid. I left in July of '68. Have you been in contact with any others. It was an outstanding group of airman.
I used to be on comvoys between Phu Cat and Pleiku during my 67.68 tour. Binh Dinh was Ho Chi Minh's hometown and not a friendly place to drive through on the way to Quin Nhon. An Khe pass was always a please particularly with AvGas tankers leading the way. Anyone else out there made this trip?
I made the trip one time in late 1967. We were told to replace the current Red Horse squad. in Pleiku. We took several pieces of heavy equipment with us including a scraper, dozer, compacter and supplies. I remember stopping at a army gun emplacement because in was getting dark. It started raining so hard that evening we slept under one of the dump trucks. Every hour the army was getting their kicks firing their field piece across the pass scaring the **** out of us. Besides they didn't want us to get any sleep either.
A GREAT TIME was had by all. The 819th did it again. The weather gods smiled down upon us and helped make this one of "the best reunions we have had" to quote a few of those in attendance. We are now looking forward to May of next year. Plan on attending.
I agree, it was a great time and some new faces made it even better. A special thanks to Gordon and Nancy for the super job of hosting. And also to Mark and Kathy Guidry for their on site assistance. South Carolina next year. Looking forward to it

A hugh thank you to Gordon for putting this all together. We al had a great time visiting the Academy, the chuck house dinner, and Pike's Peak. And as great as that all that was, it was even better to see everyone. It's been 40 years since we first got together and I still can sense that we all feel that we were part of something special. The 819th was/is a special unit, staffed by special people.
