Chapter 14: Today I met the boy I’m gonna marry
Hardly the reception he was looking for, Shawn quickly pardoned himself and took off after her. Belle couldn’t have run far. Standing outside of the pub, Shawn couldn’t see her anywhere.
“Shawn, why are you here? Do you want to cause her more pain?”
Shawn whipped his head back to see whose voice that was.
“Chloe, I don’t think it’s any of your business, but I wanted to congratulate Belle in person before I had to leave. This is one special event in her life and I wanted to be a part of it.”
“See, I don’t understand that reasoning because you weren’t here for any of the other special events in her life. And you‘re wrong because Belle is my friend and it does concern me. I want her to be happy, unlike you do.” Turning on her heel, Chloe made one last remark. “Shawn, if you want to find her, I suggest you dig into her childhood if you can remember that far back.”
*What a damned cryptic remark. How the hell am I supposed to know where Belle liked to go?* He headed to the only spot he could think of the park.
After about an hour of searching, Shawn was down to his last spot, the pier. He hoped she was there because he was starting to get tired of walking. Yelling her name wasn’t too good for his vocal chords either. Losing all hope, Shawn walked down to the end of the pier when he didn’t find her.
***
Shawn and his friend Billy had been playing hide-and-go-seek on the pier when it was Billy’s turn to be “it.” Shawn quickly scrambled, looking for the perfect hiding place. Slipping underneath the rail, Shawn hopped from a box and hid below an old fishing net and behind some crates. Peering over the box, Shawn peeked to see if Billy had finished counting to 25 yet. Feeling a tug on his shirt, Shawn thought he had been found.
“Awww...Billy you cheated. You were s’pposed to count to 50, not 25.” Looking at his friend, he was surprised to find that it was not his friend at all, but a girl. It was Isabella Black, the daughter of one of his parents’ friends. She was very annoying to Shawn, but she was crying and he had to help her.
“What’s wrong with you?” Shawn asked, trying to be sincere.
“I...sniff...lost...my...buddy bear,” she sniffled trying hard to be a big girl and not cry.
Looking at her, Shawn felt very sad for this girl. He knew she never left home without it and she loved it more than anything. “C’mon, I will help you look for it.” Grabbing her hand, he dragged her out of their hiding spot. Taking her around the area, they searched high and low until their little legs could carry them no more.
“SHAWN DOUGLAS BRADY! Where have you been?!” Shawn’s mother ran up to him and hugged him.
“IZZY-B, where did you run off to?” John, Belle’s dad ran up to her.
“I was...I was...looking for my buddy bear...” she burst into tears again.
“This one?” Shawn’s father held out a tattered half green bear, with no nose. Belle’s eyes lit up and grabbed her best friend. “Your mother was looking for you, she said you left it in the car, she dropped by before work.” The adults started talking and the to children were left to talk amongst themselves.
“Thank you for helping me find my bear,” she said sweetly.
“You’re welcome.” Shawn backed away from her as she seemed to move closer. Belle ran up to him and planted a kiss on his cheek.
“EEEWWWWWWW!!!” Shawn yelled as he tried to wipe the cooties off his cheek.
***
Shawn rubbed his cheek. He wished that he could travel back into time and change everything. Then maybe he would be the one Belle was marrying. Leaning just a little over the railing, Shawn caught a glimpse of her, sitting in the exact same place he had found her almost twenty years before.
