Chapter 6
Shawn walks downstairs to watch a little television.
Shawn: Belle's not going to call… it's been about an hour since I called her; she and Mimi must still be at Dot.com… Maybe I should just call her on her cell phone… Okay, if she doesn't call in another 20 minutes I will…
He sits on the couch and grabs the remote from the coffee table. He flips through a few channels and not really seeing anything he wants to watch, he turns off the television drops the remote on the coffee table and goes back upstairs to his room. Grabbing his backpack off the floor he sits down again at his desk. Pulling out the notebook where he'd written the history assignment he chuckles.
Shawn: I should have just asked her out on a date instead of coming up with the lame excuse about history… No, not with Mimi standing right there. She might get the impression that I wanted both of them to go to a movie with me… Yeah, it's better that I waited.
The phone rings startling Shawn. He jumps out of his chair, dives onto the bed and grabs the phone.
Shawn: (sounding a little winded) Hello?
Belle: Hey Shawn, I just got your message.
Shawn: Hi, Uh… Did you and Mimi have fun?
Belle: Yeah, I guess so. So you saw Philip?
Shawn: Yeah, I saw him right after you and Mimi left… Are you okay? You sound a little… upset.
Belle: Oh, I'm fine… We just had a little family meeting; I guess I'm still upset about that.
Shawn: Oh really? What happened?
Belle: The usual. So, you had a question for me?
Shawn: Uh… Yeah… I did… I mean, I do… Um…
Belle: Are you okay?
Shawn: I'm fine, um… I was just wondering… Um… Well, are you and Mimi hanging out tonight?
Belle: No, I mean, not anymore.
Shawn: Oh? Did you guys have a fight?
Belle: No. She just had to go work on that project with Jan.
Shawn: Oh okay. (He pauses for a moment)
Belle: You called to ask if I was hanging out with Mimi tonight?
Shawn: What? No, I… Are you… Did you want to go to a movie or something? Whew!
Belle: Tonight? Sure. Um… do you want to meet me at Dot.com first? That way we can talk first. You know about Philip and Chloe… and Mimi.
Shawn: Sure, She and Mimi must have had an argument. How about in 30 minutes?
Belle: Okay, sounds good. I'll see you at 7:30 then.
Shawn: Okay Bye.
Belle: Bye.
Instead of passing the time at his house, Shawn goes to Dot.com to wait for Belle. As he arrives he notices Mimi and Jan bent over a computer with their heads together. He chooses a booth as far away from them as possible.
At 7:45 Belle rushes in, the reason she is late is obvious. Her hair is no longer in a ponytail; she has styled it so the ends are slightly flipped out. She is wearing a black leather jacket and jeans. Belle slides into the seat across from him and flashes him a bright smile. He smiles back at her just as bright.
Shawn: Hi.
Belle: Hi, I'm sorry I'm late… I didn't want to embarrass you with my hair.
Shawn: That's okay. You look… I mean… Your hair looks b… very nice.
Belle: Wow, no hair insults? I'm shocked!
Shawn: Yeah. Are you thirsty? I'm going to go get something. What would you like?
Belle: Uh, root beer.
Shawn: Okay, I'll be right back.
When Shawn returns with the drinks he is a little flustered. Belle has taken off her jacket to reveal a form fitting long sleeve red shirt, the same shade of red as the dress in his dream.
Shawn: OH Boy! (He hands her the drink and sits down meeting her gaze. Unable to speak but also unable to look away)
Belle: Thank you. (She looks down as she says this.)
Shawn: Uh huh.
Belle: Are you okay Shawn?
Shawn: Uh huh. You?
Belle: (giggles) Yeah, I'm fine… I'm not the one who can't seem to speak.
Shawn: Oh, I'm sorry I was just… thinking.
Belle: Uh oh. That's dangerous.
Shawn: I'll say. So… Mimi and Jan sure do look chummy.
Belle: I know. I think they are definitely up to something.
Shawn: Did you and Mimi have an argument?
Belle: No. She said she talked to you yesterday… Shawn, do you have feelings for Mimi?
Shawn: What? No. Look, I know the kiss was a really stupid thing to do, and I wish I could take it back, but I can't.
Belle: No, you can't.
Shawn: I did talk to her yesterday; she came back here after you left…
Belle: Yeah, she told me.
Shawn: Oh, okay. Then if she told you about our conversation, why'd you ask if I was interested in her?
Belle: You gave her that impression.
Shawn: Humph! Okaaay.
Belle: What exactly did you say to her?
Shawn: Uh, let's see… I told her I was sorry for kissing her and leading her on. Before I could say anymore, she cut me off and told me to forget about it. I thought that meant she understood that I wasn't interested in her.
Belle: You don't like Mimi?
Shawn: I didn't say that, I just… I mean… she's your friend… you know. I mean it's not like I think about hanging out with her when you're not around… I don't dislike her.
Belle: So, you're not interested in her, I mean romantically?
Shawn: Why are we talking about Mimi? No, I have no interest in dating Mimi. I realize the kiss in Paris was a huge mistake. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but if she doesn't hurry up and get the message that she's not the girl I want, I may have to.
Belle: So there is someone you're interested in.
Shawn: Huh?
Belle: You just said Mimi wasn't the girl you want… like there's another girl you do want.
Shawn: Oh, I was just… I mean… (He starts to shift around in his seat) I didn't say… well… Why are we talking about this again?
Belle: You brought it up…
Shawn: Okay, then I'll drop it. I thought we came here to talk about Philip.
Belle: We did, but I promised Mimi I would talk to you… about her.
Shawn: We did, so now let's talk about something else. Please.
