Chapter 16: In your eyes
Three weeks had passed since Shawn had come back to Salem. He felt more at ease and relaxed after seeing old friends and family. Belle also felt happier, but everyone believed that the proximity of the wedding was the reason. One thing Shawn was a little suspicious of was Chasen Vander Holt. The guy was trying to act like he was no good, like a real jerk. He seemed to be going out of his way to make Shawn’s stay miserable. However, Shawn said nothing of this to Belle, adhering to Katie’s warning. Shawn did not want to make the reason for his visit known to everyone. He would wait it out, until Belle came to her senses. The good sign was that with every passing day, he and Belle were growing closer, using their old nicknames, teasing, and slightly flirting with one another. Shawn was having more fun in Salem than he had ever had in Los Angeles. He actually felt loved, like people knew him and liked him for who he really was. He was also exploring new ideas for his album and had written several new songs that he could not wait to record. Katie seemed to be having a really good time as well. She was spending much of her time with his great grandmother. Everyone embraced her presence after they realized that she wasn’t his girlfriend.
Katie walked, alone to the pub to see if Shawn was there. He had been having a lot of fun with his old friends, especially Belle. She could see how Shawn could be so enraptured with a person. Belle was absolutely breathtaking. She had shoulder length blond hair that she often wore conservatively and the bluest eyes Katie had ever seen. Belle was also kind and generous, making Katie feel like one of the family from the moment they met. Although she didn’t want to admit it, Katie was a tad jealous. Not paying attention to where she was going, she bumped right into a young man.
“Sorry,” Katie looked at his face, blue eyes, blond hair framing his face. This guy was a definite keeper. The stranger smiled and showed off his dimples. *What a hottie.*
The gentleman walked a few more paces before looking back at the girl. She looked almost identical to someone he once knew. Brushing the thought out of his mind, he headed for Salem place to pick up a few items for his fiancee.
Shawn sat in Belle’s new home and surveyed his surroundings. The fancily furnished apartment was evidently a bachelor pad before Belle had brought her touch to it. Getting antsy, Shawn opened a huge art deco book that was hidden up on a book shelf. Instead of finding works of art, Shawn found himself staring at strategically placed photographs in an album. Carefully flipping the pages, he observed Chasen with what had to be one of the most striking young ladies Shawn had ever seen. Her eyes were a radiant shade of emerald and her skin had a gorgeous golden shine. In all of the pictures, they seemed to be having so much fun. He even recognized some of the places they had visited together. Shawn wondered who this mystery woman was and if Chasen was having an affair with her. The two looked way closer than friends should be. Nearing the end of the album, Shawn detected a sense of sadness in their photos, as if they were being taken away from each other. Finding the last page, Shawn saw, written in blurred, messy handwriting, the name Desiree: 1985-2003 and a flattened black rose. Almost amazed that the pictures were from more than five years ago, Shawn hurriedly flipped back to look at her once again. His rush in committing this act, led to the fluttering of papers as they flew from the book, to the ground. Silently cursing at himself, Shawn picked up the papers and tried to neatly reorganize them in the pocket of the book. Curious, Shawn picked up what seemed to be a letter and started to read. A moment later, Shawn felt himself fighting tears from his eyes. He didn’t expect a mere love letter to move him so much. All of the events and emotions described by this girl were so strong and passionate. He read of plans of the two lovers to elope and escape away from parents who did not understand their need for each other. Suddenly becoming too emotional to withstand it, Shawn carelessly stuffed the notes back into their hiding place. The letters each had a poignancy to them, one that Shawn could not describe. He placed the book high on the shelf and prayed that no one would discover his poking around. For the first time this trip, Shawn actually pitied Chasen, it seemed that he shared a true love for a woman whose life tragically ended, and that he deserved to have Belle. Maybe he did actually love her and Shawn was just trying to ruin his happiness. Feeling guilty and selfish, Shawn remembered a few lines from a letter, taking this line and adding more lyrics to it.
Love, I get so lost sometimes
Days pass, and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go, I come back to the place you are
And all my instincts they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes, the light the heat
Your eyes I am complete
Your eyes, I see the doorway
Of a thousand churches
Your eyes, the Resolution
Your eyes, of all the fruitless searches
Oh I see the light in your eyes
Oh I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
Love, I don’t like to see so much pain
So much wasted, and this moment keeps slipping away
I guess you’re tired, working so hard, for our survival
I look to be tired with you, to keep me awake at life
(In your eyes by Peter Gabriel)
