broken heater control (or disconnected)

The lever that controls hot or cold in my 1972 Skylark has either slipped off (if that's possible) or is broken. It broke at the half way point and that's hot down here in the South. Is it a major task to fix this? Will I need a mechanic? I'm a novice.
