Hey folks, acquired this old car, got it smogged and all of a sudden the car started overheating. Not an auto mechanic but formerly an aviation mech, what I noticed was that the coolant res was backfilling.

Took the car to the local mechanic and he wasn't much help, he told me he THOUGHT it could be a blown head, however I didn't see any the signs of leakage from the head, all I noticed was the reservoir was backfilling. Going to try repairing it by the cheapest means, would this be replacing the thermostat? If so, where can I find an illustrations to help me do this job? Any links, tips, or questions are welcome.
