CrossDOS help

I have a PC with WinME and an Amiga with Workbench 3.1

As my original Amiga disks are corrupt, I'd like to get the ADF files for SWOS which are on the PC onto Amiga disks (I have the ADF2Disk program). The problem is, after mounting the CrossDOS drivers, the Amiga still doesn't recognise the PC formatted disk, can anyone help?

Couple of ideas...

(Don't know if you've tried these but...)

Make sure you format the disk to 720k and not 1.4Mb on the PC.

If that doesn't work, format the disk on the Amiga using cross dos.

Remember, some disk images are larger than 720k and may need compressing before copying them onto the PC formatted disk!

Still need help

June 21 2002, 9:18 AM

I am formatting to 720KB on the PC.

I know its possible to format it on the Amiga, but I only have the CrossDOS that comes with WB 3.1

Can you format to 720KB using this?/
Does anyone know how?

Older version...

I used to use an older version of Cross Dos that came free with Amiga Format years ago.

This had an icon you could click that formatted the disk in df0: to PC 720k. You could also, once the program was mounted, use the shell 'format' command specifing di0: instead of df0:

format di0:

I would check it out for you on the emulator but I recently installed windows XP and can't remember where my backups of WB3.1 are! I'll try and dig them out.

Hmm... Get errors on the Amiga shell window

June 24 2002, 12:41 PM

I tried 'format di0:', with the PC0: device mounted, I got an error saying 'Format Failure. Wrong Number of Arguments'.

I also tried 'format drive di0:', but had a 'Format Failure. Required Argument missing' error.

I also tried the equivalents for PC0: and inerstingly, the same for DF0: gave me the errors too. Are there any other parameters to be passed on the format command?

Glad you got it to format...

I forgot the syntax for drive identification changed in later version from di?: to pc?: (DUH! me)

Did this rectify the original problem of the Amiga not recognising the 720k disk format and did you manage to transfer your SWOS disks?

compression probs

June 25 2002, 1:17 PM

unfortunately, the swos disks compress to over 720KB using LHA.

I've downloaded some Amiga ZIP Extractors, but they don't have multi-part/multi-disk support.

I had the same problem...

June 25 2002, 4:17 PM

Same thing for me but this time it was Alien Breed. Couldn't be bothered setting up a transfer cable just for a couple of disks so gave up in the end.

I asked exactly the same question on this board you've just asked and was told there was one program that supported multipart archives BUT the person who told me couldn't remember what it was called!

Suffice to say I didn't find it

You have set the zip compression to the best / highest setting? This may help if you haven't set it as most programs default to normal (which is a trade off for slower computers of speed to compress vs file size) - What program are you using to compress?

Can the SWOS disk images be read through workbench? If so you could take the files from the disk image, stick half on the PC floppy, copy the contents of the PC floppy to your Amiga floppy disk then transfer the remaining files in the same way.

(That doesn't make much sense but I think you'll get the gist of it!)

i know what you mean

i have adf opus which can extract files from an adf image. the problem is, although swos is an AmigaDOS disk, it has copy protection so just opying the files may not work.
