What is AROS?

AROS stands for 'Amiga Research Operating System' and is an open source re-implementation of the Amiga 3.1 API.

In other words it's a free version of Amiga Workbench that runs on PCs (work has been done for other platforms but the PC version is the main one). In recent times AROS has taken it's own path away from the start point of Workbench 3.1, extending the available features, making it unique - but it should still feel familiar to any former Amiga user!

For a comprehensive FAQ on AROS itsself please check out the AROS homepage.

What is AROS Max then?

AROS Max is a pre-configured live bootable CD image, made to show off the best that AROS has to offer. Like a Linux distribution it contains a pile of software thats ready to use from the CD, and if you have a spare PC it can be installed as the main operating system too (at the time of writing this is for EXPERIENCED USERS ONLY).
