Who is the guy who worked on your jet? How long did he have it? And, do you have sand anywhere where you live?
Full on cavitation can occur and would doo 3mph or so while the 240 is raging. However, if you did this with sand... the cavitation would decrease unless you constantly sucked up more sand. If you had a pump full of weeds... that would be a different story. Weeds can sit on the jet intake and cause cavitation until you doo the ten toe removal trick pushing the weeds off the grate. Seeing how you never mentioned any weeds... and it is not possible to have sand constantly in your pump for miles... I will have to rule out cavitation due to sand or weeds.
Having said that... one Dooer had a popstick wedge onto the leading edge of his impeller which caused massive cavitation. He wasn't able to plane. This could be a potential thing to check.
Weighing all the possibilities... I would have to say one of three things happened...
1) You some how damaged your jetpump so it won't work... i.e. massive cavitation.
2) You have something in your jetpump causing the problem... perhaps a hydro-suck tine or two!
3) (Most likely) Your tech took your jet for joy ride and he highsided the jet on a sandbar ingesting a ton of sand into the powerhead. Instead of getting out and pushing the jet off the sandbar... he used the throttle(s) and dog in deeper. After he failed to get the jet off the sandbar via 240 muscle, he finally pushed off. When he restarted the jet, it ran really sickly and he got it back to the trailer asap. When you got the jet back, you flushed it and found a cup full of sand in your drive way. The sand that he sucked up. When you returned to the water, you discovered he destroyed your jetpump via the "sandblasting" while he attempted to get off the sandbar.
This is what you need to doo... Get under your jet and look up into the grate. Look for anything, a missing tine, a rock or anything which should not belong up in there. I suspect you will find something. Also, look up the rear end of the jetpump and perform the same autopsy. There is a reason why the jet has no power and you should be able to identify what it is.
I am sorry to say, my fello Dooer, this doesn't sound good. I am also worried about you driving your jet for miles with the pump cavitating. You can seriously damage a jetpump with prolonged cavitation. A cavitating pump means it has tiny air bubbles firing through and the noise you hear are the millions of bubbles hitting the metal parts... affectively sand blasting them. When ever you hear cavitation you should stop immediately and determine what is causing it so you don't damage your jetpump.
Doo a thorough inspection, take pictures and let us know what your find.
ps. I never believed the tech's reason for full throttle at start. I would seriously think about finding a new tech. This guy may just have destroyed your jet and perhaps did things to it on purpose so you would come back... so he could jetwild. The power of the Doo... you never know what people will doo.
