I don't know if a salary cap will necessarily help. For example:
We have $40 million dollar salary cap (I'm just pulling the numbers out of my butt). Some GM goes out, gives Mike Modano 10 million dollars. Then he gives Patrick Roy 11 million dollars. That's 21 million dollars, give 5 million dollars to Ryan Smyth and 3 million dollars to Robert Kron. That leaves said GM 11 million dollars on 16 players. The team, of course, tanks. The GM bolts and some new guy takes over. He's left with a ****ty team, no room for flexibility (with salaries risen, no one else can take on the huge contracts) and is pretty much stuck in a bad situation.
Salary caps won't work, I think unless someone can think of something good, we're just going to have to rely on the GMs to use restraint. Please, everyone, PLEASE.
