Response to solvak fan why?
In terms of depth on the Rockets right now for D men, I would rate as follows:
1). Josh Gorges
2). Duncan Keith
3). Tomas Slovak
4). Shea Weber
5). Mike Card
6). Brett Palin
7). Ryan Mayko
8). Darren Deschamps
-Gorges has played with a lot more confidence this year and is a better all around defenceman. Ever since he signed the NHL contract, he has upped his game to the next level...if he keeps it up, look for an invite to the WJC next year
-Keith is an offensive minded guy with great speed, composure and vision. He can move the puck well on the PP. His size is a concern and he is definitely an offensive minded guy....May just show that he is the #1 guy here once he gets adjusted to the system and a regular D partner
-Slovak has picked his game up considerably from last year. His number of turn overs and blind passes have declined this season. Leads the dub in defenceman scoring and says a lot about his offensive skills. Wouldn't hurt at all if he comes back next year
-Weber has shown that he is a solid, physical presence on the back end. Not flashy, but takes care of business in his own end and can lay the body when necessary. Has good size and has shown that he can play under pressure. We could use one more physical guy like him on the back end
-Card could just as easily been 4 on this list. No doubt he is going to be a good one. He will lead the PP on this team for years to come. The only reason he is ranked here is that he is 16 and an offensive D man, for which we have 3 veterans who have experience in this role listed above. Good rookie season and continues to improve.
-Palin is not flashy and can play the body when he needs to. He too has upped his game this season which has been a pleasant surprise. Does not make any major mistakes out there. Could be good trade bait or stick around for next season as a 6th or 7th guy
-Mayko has contributed more this season than last. Definitely not a tough guy and has been steady. Not a lot of upside with him but given more ice and a chance to develop, he could improve. Another guy who we could look to package in a trade
-Deschamps had not played much this season. When he has played he has looked okay with no glaring mistakes made. Needs time to develop his game
Overall, this has to be the strongest part of the Rockets team. A lot of skill and scoring punch on the back end, and each one of these guys could be back for the M Cup next season. The only real concern is a lack of toughness and physical presence on D. If a team drives hard and pushes this D around, there is a good chance they will have success. Another player that can take care of his end and take the body is all that is really needed.
