Timing, valve adjustment, vacuum leeks, and cam degree with timing gears can all cause a car to run bad at low rpms. Most timing marks have slipped on the balancer. You have to set the timing by other means. After that you can mark it and go back to the marks when you need to with a timing light. You did not say if your car was automatic. Most automatic cars will preform well with cams of 300 deg. advertised duration or less. If you got a timing gear set at the local parts store there is a good chance they gave you the wrong one. It must have the line up dot over the keyway on the crank gear. If it does not you have a smog gear which comes in most kits at the local store. This retards the cam. I think a Rochester carb. is big enuff.
