Jimmy, Jim, Rich, & Mark, thanks for your thoughts on my predicament. The following offers some additional insight, f.y.i.
I currently have my timing set at about 13 degrees before BTDC. This was accomplished by adusting the distributor until I could get maximum vacum of about 10 lbs. at idle. I cannot get any higher then this amount, through adjusting the distributor. There is no pinging at this setting. As far as I can determine, there are no vacum leaks, and I have gone over this aspect carefully. My car is a C-6 automatic, and in regards to the timing gear set, I am sure the marks lined up properly when I installed the new timing gear set. The point about the q-jet power valve opening too soon was not one I had thought of previously. A mechanic had mentioned to me that he felt that the engine was receiving too much gas at idle, therefore running too rich. I believe that this Q-jet can do the job for me, if I can ensure what adjustments need to be done to it, and then I find the appropriate specialist to do the necessary work to the carburetor. If you think of anything else, please let me know, and Jimmy, i'll e-mail you about your contact who knows about Q-jets. Thanks. Ken M.
