Alternator Harness

I need some help from someone with an intact, factory alternator/engine wiring harness. I am having charging system problems stemming from a previous owner's attempt to bypass the use of the ammeter in the center console. Everytime I think I have figured out what I need, I run across something else that confuses the issue. My service manual (Ford) shows that from the alternator, the white/black wire is not used with an ammeter. The alternator harness (just ordered and received a repop) contains a plug (yellow wire) to the radio supression condensor, a plug (green/red wire) from the regulator plug to the engine harness and a big eye (black wire) to the junction block. The confusion lies in that last week I did soem junkyard hunting while on vacation. Every Mustang/Cougar I found with gauges had a white/black wire present from the alternator harness that connected directly to the engine harness through a plastic, single wire male/female plug. Do I need this wire or not? Could you guys that can, check your harnesses and let me know what is there. This is becoming a very frustrating exercise for me. This is for a 72, but I don't believe there should be a difference. Thanks for your help.
