Slipped Up

by Jim Gates

Jess,
For what it's worth, I have a set of the Hooker model 6115 headers on our non-CJ headed 460 powered Mach 1. I recently had to remove the transmission for a trip to the tranny clinic, which necessitated the removal of the drivers side header. The tubes for the number 7 & 8 cylinders are slip joints connecting near the collector to complete the assembly. Living in the snow belt all my life has never made me a big fan of this type of connection, and naturally very leary of these. When installed, I coated both surfaces with anti-seize compound and hoped for the best. The headers have been installed for two years and sure enough, one of the tubes was locked in place. I had a hell of a time getting it loose so I could get the header off the engine. I had to heat it and melt candle wax into the joint to break it free. I called Hooker's tech assistance line to see if they had a recommended method to prevent this from happening. Their response was that, "they never have a problem with that." The rep didn't seem to have a bit of interest in the fact that it DOES happen and in a short period of time on a car that is not exposed to the elements. I am not at all excited at the prospect of adding the removal of the headers to my list of annual tasks just to make sure that when I need to get them off, I'll be able to.
